You will join the Corporate Governance Team as a subject matter expert on risk and issue management. You will be responsible for supporting a consistent, robust and effective Risk and Issue management culture across the organisation, with risk management as a tool to help the organisation achieve its strategic goals and incorporated into service management practice. You will need to be thorough, proactive and committed to being the go-to specialist.

Main duties of the job

The Risk and Issue Specialist will support a consistent, robust and effective Risk and Issue management culture across the organisation, with risk management as a tool to help the organisation achieve its strategic goals and incorporated into service management practice.

The Risk and Issue Specialist will train, coach and mentor colleagues involved in service delivery and, where appropriate, facilitate risk and issue workshops (including cross-working with the Portfolio Management Directorate).

As a Risk and Issue Specialist you will have broad knowledge of operational service delivery and programme/project methodology, and providing specialised analysis to Governance Boards, Committees and Senior Leadership.

As a Risk and Issue Specialist you will be required to engage with Directors, Heads of Services, Risk Leads, Senior Managers, Programme/Project Managers and other colleagues, including specific subject matter experts, across the organisation on a day-to-day basis.

Job responsibilities

  1. Risk & Issue Management
    • Developing and implementing a programme of regular facilitated risk and issue reviews/workshops with key teams and stakeholders and leading on the use of risk, issue and assurance techniques.
    • Undertaking qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, as required by Governance Boards, Leadership Team, Audit and Risk Management Committee (ARC) and NHSBSA Main Board as appropriate.
    • Developing and delivering risk and issue management training and awareness material to stakeholders, as required.
    • Working as a key part of the Corporate Governance Team to ensure that risks and issues are identified and escalated appropriately from services.
    • Planning the continuous improvement of risk and issue strategies, processes and procedures across the business.
    • Producing and managing the corporate-level risk and issue register, collating together key themes across all business risks and issues.
  2. People and Leadership
    • Communicate and build commitment to a shared vision and standards for risks and issues within the NHSBSA.
    • Drive development of colleagues across the business via leading by example, knowledge sharing, training, mentoring and contribution to professional development.
  3. Governance & Reporting
    • Establishing clear understanding and adherence to, and contributing to the ongoing development of, the NHSBSA Risk Management Framework.
    • Co-ordinating risk and issue reporting to Governance Boards, Leadership Team, Audit and Risk Management Committee (ARC) and NHSBSA Main Board as appropriate.
  4. Stakeholder Management
    • Establishing excellent stakeholder relationships within the team and across the NHSBSA.
    • Engaging in debate, negotiating and influencing to resolve issues and differences between stakeholders.
    • Developing effective relationships with external stakeholders, including other Arms Length Bodies (ALBs) and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

Personal Qualities, Knowledge and Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of best practice in risk management.
  • Able to present complex and sensitive information to internal and external stakeholders.

Experience

  • Experience of working as the organisational subject matter expert on risk management.
  • Significant experience of facilitating multidisciplinary risk workshops.

Qualifications

  • Degree in relevant subject or significant equivalent experience in risk management.
  • Risk management qualification (or willingness to work towards).
