1st Line Defence is the leading Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Risk Mitigation Company in the UK, providing solutions worldwide for risk posed by unexploded bombs and munitions on both land and sea.

About the Role

We are recruiting a Trainee Project Researcher to write Preliminary and Detailed UXO Risk Assessments. You will work initially from our central office in Hoddesdon and then on a rotational home‑based basis. The starting salary is £22,222.20.

About You

Essential: a degree in History or a similar subject, excellent technical writing and research skills, and a strong attention to detail. A qualification in military history is preferred, and a solid knowledge of WWI/WWII military history is required. You should also possess strong verbal and written communication skills, be highly accurate, have good MS Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), and be able to prioritise, meet tight deadlines, and adapt quickly.

Key Tasks

• Research and write Preliminary and Detailed UXO Risk Assessments.
• Produce written project reports to deadlines and manage own timescale for report production.
• Identify historical information resources and organise visits to obtain all required information, including visits to local and national archives nationwide.
• Conduct historical research as required for active projects and as background to site works.
• Maintain, update and improve department historic databases and mapping.

The Role

Duration: 6‑month probation moving onto a permanent position.
