New Beginnings is a specialist in-patient detoxification unit for drug and alcohol service users combined with a structured day programme (SDP) accessible to service users undergoing detoxification. The staff on the detoxification unit work as part of an integrated team with the structured day programme staff to offer a comprehensive and seamless programme to service users.

Main duties of the job: The Drug and Alcohol Nurse will act as a named nurse to a defined allocated shared caseload of service users with a low to high degree of complexity whilst they are undergoing detoxification on the unit under the supervision of the Senior Drug and Alcohol Nurse, Team leader, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Specialty Doctor/Consultant as appropriate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Linking service users with the structured day programme to access group work and recovery support interventions such as education, training, employment, debt management, housing, sports and diversionary activities, and other wrap-around services.
  • Building strong links with other statutory and non-statutory organisations to increase physical and economic capital for service users.
  • Working in cooperation with mutual aid groups, providing facilitated access and assertive linkage to these networks.

  • Registered Nurse – must hold current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • NMC approved mentor and assessing course
  • Evidence of learning beyond registration
