SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs routine and special laboratory assays of patient specimens (e.g., body fluids, exudates, skin scrapings, or surgical specimens), exercising independent judgment when evaluating the validity of test results prior to result reporting. Provides data for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Operates and calibrates all equipment in the area of specialization, evaluates the validity of laboratory data, records test results, and communicates with physicians, pathologists, and nursing staff regarding test procedures and results.
EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Associates degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution; or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in CLIA regulations.
- Bachelor degree in any discipline or equivalent from an accredited institution is also acceptable.
- Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), by the ASCP or equivalent certification is strongly preferred (those without Certification are typically expected to become certified within 6 months of date of hire).
- Will also accept certifications meeting the federal requirements of CLIA 88.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
EXPERIENCE
One year of laboratory experience preferred.
SKILLS
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex clinical and instrument problems.
- Accurate, reliable, and able to work well under pressure and to finish a task once started.
- Strong communication skills, both in writing and speaking.
