Bay Primary Care Network (PCN) continues to grow and we have an opportunity for a number of experienced Pharmacy Technicians to join us in developing this new role in Primary Care. The role involves integrating with our team of clinical and primary care pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, medicines management team, and the wider practice team.

Main Duties of the Job:

The pharmacy technician will play a vital role, complementing clinical pharmacists, community pharmacists, and other members of the PCN multi-disciplinary team. Working under supervision of the PCN Pharmacist, the technician will ensure effective and efficient use of medicines. Responsibilities include clinical, technical, and administrative tasks. The role aims to lead improvements to maximise safe, cost-effective prescribing and enhance patient care. Tasks include medication switching, improving repeat prescribing, promoting online ordering, minimising clinical risks, and reducing waste. The technician will also promote understanding of medicines optimisation principles and support national and NICE initiatives.

Job Responsibilities:

The pharmacy technician will work under supervision, handling clinical, technical, and administrative duties:

  • Clinical: Support medicines use through shared decision-making with patients; Assist with medication reviews, reconciliation, and patient education; Support medication reviews and reconciliation for care home patients and during patient transfers; Assist in Structured Medication Reviews (SMRs) and monitoring tests; Address public health and social care needs, including lifestyle advice and health inequalities; Participate in shared care protocols and liaise with Clinical Pharmacists; Support antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
  • Technical and Administrative: Ensure efficient medicines optimisation processes; Implement ordering, return, and wastage reduction processes; Support legal, safe handling of medicines and electronic prescription services; Promote Electronic Repeat Dispensing and online ordering; Build relationships with pharmacy and healthcare professionals; Support prescription request management and policy implementation; Contribute to practice policies and audits.
  • Education, Teaching, and Mentoring: Undertake or be prepared to start the Primary Care Pharmacy Educational Pathway (PCPEP); Participate in performance reviews and appraisals; Undertake further specialist training as needed; Supervise and coach practice team members; Deliver in-house education sessions.
  • Delivering a Quality Service: Maintain professional registration; Keep accurate patient records; Be aware of data protection and confidentiality; Utilize technology and software for care management; Use accurate Read codes for data retrieval; Develop policies and procedures; Apply legal standards for vulnerable patients; Participate in Significant Event Audits; Work within practice policies and statutory requirements.

Person Specification:

Qualifications: Registration with the GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician; BTEC Pharmaceutical Sciences or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent experience).

Experience: Commitment to professional development; Experience as a qualified, registered pharmacy technician; Experience with pharmaceutical procedures and legislation, including controlled drugs; Computer literacy (Word, Excel, email, internet).

Desirable Skills and Experience: Primary care experience; Knowledge of PCNs, general practice, evidence-based medicine; Medical terminology familiarity; Data analysis and interpretation skills; Presentation skills and PowerPoint proficiency; Use of EMIS Web.

Skills: Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; Ability to work independently and in a team; Work efficiently under tight deadlines; Confidentiality and attention to detail; Problem-solving and adaptability; Proficient keyboard skills and IT use; Own transport and ability to travel.
