The Role

As a Junior Naval Architect, you’ll have a role that is out of the ordinary. The primary focus of the job will be the delivery of technical projects for the UK Ministry of Defence and international commercial customers. Day-to-day, you’ll be working in resistance and propulsion, cavitation, propulsion and propeller design, and model manufacturing. As part of the wider team, there will be opportunities to be involved in ship and submarine stability, seakeeping, manoeuvring, control, structures, and life support.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Use your own engineering knowledge and domain-specific understanding to lead discrete engineering-based tasks
  • Work with the technical teams to identify opportunities to spread your knowledge as well as to develop your skills and those of the team
  • Look to maximise the output of the team through discussions and collaboration
  • Give technical presentations and talk knowledgeably about the work conducted
  • Ensure that tasks you undertake are conducted safely, highlighting hazards and potentially unsafe practices
  • Work with representatives from governance and discipline functions to ensure the projects you work on comply with statutory, regulatory, company, business, and project-specific processes and procedures

This role is 37 hours per week based at Gosport. Hybrid working patterns are available.

Essential experience of the Junior Naval Architect:

You should have an excellent understanding of engineering, equivalent to someone who has completed a BEng / MEng in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering. We look for a range of experience from graduate-level candidates to experienced engineers.

Essential qualifications for the Junior Naval Architect:

You are willing to work towards Chartered Engineer status. Many roles in QinetiQ are subject to national security vetting being completed. Applicants who already hold the appropriate level of vetting may be able to transfer it upon appointment. Some roles are also subject to additional restrictions, which may affect eligibility based on nationality or previous nationalities.
