Balfor Recruitment are working in partnership with a Pupil Referral Unit in Wolverhampton. The PRU are looking to appoint several Teaching Assistants to join them in September 2025. The successful candidates will be working with pupils who are no longer able to access mainstream education.

A pupil referral unit is an alternate education provision in the UK. It is specifically designed for students who struggle to succeed in a mainstream school setting. Abbreviated to PRU, they provide a more tailored and supportive atmosphere, ensuring that students continue their education in a way that meets their individual needs.

The PRU are looking for experienced Level 3 Teaching Assistants, who will provide an education and support young people. You will have had experience of working within a classroom setting, of supporting young people with complex needs and challenging behaviour. Having a caring and patient nature will be advantageous in this role. You must be able to form positive relationships.

This role is being offered on a long term basis, 5 days a week. Some of the daily duties of this role will include:

  • Supporting young people who are no longer able to access mainstream education.
  • Preparing resources to meet the needs of students, some with additional needs and/or challenging behaviours.
  • Ensuring safety of all those around you.
  • Accompanying students on educational visits.
  • Promoting positive behaviours and attitudes to learning.
  • Carrying out personal care if needed.

This is an exciting role working in a supportive environment. There will be multiple opportunities for CPD available and the PRU will support candidates who are looking to progress their careers, this could be training to become a Higher Level Teaching Assistant or supporting candidates with obtaining QTS.

To be successful for this role you will:

  • Have a Level 3 qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience of using Makaton and/or PECS is desirable.
  • Have proven experience of working with young people with Special Needs, including ASD, ADHD, PMLD and SEMH.
  • Be friendly and be a team player.
  • Be comfortable with undertaking personal care.
  • Have a DBS on the Update Service or be willing to pay for a new check to be done.
