We are looking for an Airfield Wildlife Control Operator to join our RAF Brize Norton site on a zero hours contract. If you live close, are extremely flexible, have a driving licence, and are not afraid of lone working and shifts, this may be the role for you. This vacancy is to cover leave and sickness, so hours can vary considerably from month to month. Some weeks there will be higher output, some will be zero output. You will be paid each month for the hours worked. You will receive a rota at least a month in advance, although there may also be ad hoc emergencies requiring cover, so flexibility is key. On a zero hours contract, you are not obliged to cover last-minute requests, but you may choose to do so. Due to the nature of this contract, the role would suit someone who is financially secure or has a fully flexible second income. Retirees or those seeking occasional work are also encouraged to apply. Brize Norton operates 24/7, so shifts may include weekends and bank holidays. Typical shifts are either days (08:00 – 18:00, 10 hours including a one-hour unpaid break) or nights (18:00 – 08:00, 14 hours including 1.5 hours unpaid break). Night shifts involve being on call during darkness and conducting a sweep of the airfield every 2 hours. Shifts usually come in blocks of two, e.g., two day shifts or two night shifts. The pay rate is £12.60 per hour.

About the role: Wildlife, especially birds, pose a high risk to air safety during critical flight phases like take-off and landing. The Airfield Wildlife Control Operator (AWCO) aims to eliminate wildlife presence on the airfield, reducing aircraft risk. Wildlife is attracted to the airfield primarily due to food sources. Equipped with a 4x4 vehicle, bioacoustics, pyrotechnics, and potentially an air rifle or shotgun, you will deter wildlife from settling on the airfield and encourage populations to stay clear. All activities are conducted within guidelines from Natural England, the Police, and Local Airfield Management. You will log all activities digitally, and dispatch animals under licence as a last resort to ensure aircraft safety.

What we are looking for:

  • Colour perception safety
  • Valid UK driving licence (manual)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance
  • Live within 45 minutes of RAF Brize Norton
  • Comfortable working autonomously with a vehicle and radio
  • Willing to learn to use technology like tablets and WhatsApp
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Ability to think quickly and handle pressure
  • Shooting experience is an advantage; training provided
  • Possession of or willingness to obtain firearms certificates is a plus

This role suits active individuals who enjoy their own company, are flexible, supportive, and experienced in shooting activities such as game keeping, pest control, or military service.
