NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical roles. We provide acute hospital, primary, community, and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million, expanding to 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this position is from Monday to Sunday, and the post is fixed-term for 2 years.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a registered nurse with relevant post-registration experience and an honours degree or equivalent to undertake and complete the Specialist Practitioner Qualification PgD in Advancing District Nursing Practice at Glasgow Caledonian University, starting September 2025.

Candidates must hold an appropriate academic credit rating, typically a degree, and must demonstrate recent academic study. The course is offered on a part-time basis over 2 years. Support for university attendance and protected study leave during academic semesters will be provided. When not at university, you will practice as part of the community team. The working pattern is a 5-day schedule over a 7-day service, including public holidays, weekends, out-of-hours (OOH), and backshifts.

During the course, candidates will be employed as SPQ students – Community Staff Nurse. Upon successful completion, they will be considered for vacant band 6 District Nursing posts within Glasgow City HSCP, which involves an interview process. Preference for geographical area will be considered, but positions can be based anywhere within Glasgow City HSCP.

Candidates should be self-motivated practitioners who demonstrate an evidence-based approach to practice. The evolving primary care services require clinicians committed to continuous professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning.

Students will be supported in practice by a Community Practice Teacher/Assessor, responsible for developing a learning program and assessing competence. Learning outcomes are achieved through university coursework and practice-based learning, assessed via written assignments, examinations, and a practice learning plan.

Students passing the required modules will progress to a temporary role as Associate District Charge Nurses at the end of their training, with a band 6 uplift during supervision.

Course fees will be paid by Glasgow City HSCP. Students are eligible for travel expenses for clinical placements and home visits; travel to the university will not be reimbursed.

For NHS employees, this opportunity will be offered on a fixed-term secondment basis; for non-NHS applicants, on a Fixed Term Contract basis.

Contact details for the Recruitment Service are available in the Candidate Information Packs.
