DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Spanish teacher, this course is proficiency-oriented with a focus on meaningful communication. The target language is used as a means of communication so that students first understand and then produce the language. The curriculum has a spiral design, so that greater detail, rigor, and breadth are added to similar themes of study each subsequent school year. Students start by simply recognizing and responding to the target language. Next, they begin to use the words independently within an appropriate conversational context. This transition happens naturally as the curriculum spirals and builds on previous learning from unit to unit and grade level to grade level.
A world language provides learners the cultural knowledge and communicative skills to become globally competent and engage with the ever more flattening world. By developing proficiency in another language, learners are able to explore communities beyond their own, interact with people from different cultures, and engage in common educational, career-oriented, and leisure activities with native speakers.
Planning and Preparation:
- Plan, implement, teach, and assess a comprehensive program of study.
- Develop plans and organize daily lessons so that instruction, student application, and practice are consistently addressed within the classroom.
- Plan and develop appropriate pre- and post-instruction assessments to evaluate each pupil's progress.
- Plan for appropriate use of materials and resources that motivate students to learn.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behaviour necessary to provide an orderly and productive instructional environment conducive to teaching and learning.
- Organize classroom space and manage classroom instruction and procedures so students know what they are expected to do and learn.
- Create a learning environment of mutual respect and rapport that supports learning, as well as a sense of physical and emotional safety for all.
- Provide behavioural directions in a calm, clear, and professional manner.
- Use a variety of well-researched strategies so students enjoy an engaging, positive, and effective culture for learning.
Instruction:
- Provide students with opportunities to expand their awareness through access to community resources, field trips, presentations, and guest speakers.
- Maintain an accurate record of student attendance reports, classroom grades, and all relevant/related professional duties.
- Evaluate each pupil's performance, knowledge, and skills.
- Instruct in a manner which balances lecture, student information sharing, discovery and inquiry and whole/small group instruction.
- Use appropriate questioning and discussion techniques.
- Engage students actively and meaningfully in their learning.
