Community Health Care Assistant/Phlebotomist

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites. In collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building, newly relocated and opened on the hospital site.

The post holder will undertake delegated nursing tasks as deemed necessary to enhance the care of the patient, some of which may be competency based; wound dressings, stoma care, height and weights, baseline observations including blood pressure, venepuncture, cannulation and capillary blood sampling.

Main duties of the job include:

• Providing the highest standards of nursing care to children and their families.
• Undertaking phlebotomy procedures in a variety of settings; department, home, school or community base once fully trained and competent.
• Being an effective communicator in all aspects of their duties both in direct and indirect patient care.
• Working in collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Assessing and reporting risk to the Children’s Community Nurse (CCN) lead nurses.
• Assisting in the orientation and education of new staff.
• Taking responsibility for, prioritising and managing own workload to support clinical team.
• Working without direct supervision using experience and knowledge to ensure the highest quality care is delivered.
• Promoting and maintaining a safe and comfortable therapeutic environment for patients and their families.
• Assisting in the basic care required by patients in all care settings.
• Creating and maintaining relationships with patients, parent/carers, offering advice and support where necessary.
• Preparing patients for and assisting with specific clinical and non-clinical procedures appropriate to the clinical area.

The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) is an integral member of the ICCNT team. They will assist and support nursing, medical, and other professional staff in the delivery of high standards of holistic family centred care to children and families. The Healthcare Assistant will provide the highest standards of nursing care to children and their families.

Person specification includes:

• NVQ level 3 / equivalent in a healthcare related topic or equivalent breadth of experience.
• English and Maths GCSE or equivalent, grade A-C.
• Experience of Basic Nursing Care and Community Experience.
• Knowledge of Confidentiality, Family Centred Care, and Multi-professional working.
• Skills in Computer and keyboard skills, demonstrating a range of clinical skills.
• Ability to travel to and from community settings.
• Currently competent in paediatric phlebotomy and capillary sampling.

Personal attributes include a full driving licence required with use of their own vehicle as needs to be able to travel around the geographical area of Liverpool and Sefton in a timely manner. Demonstrates Trust Values, reliable, time management, role model, and able to prioritise tasks.
