What you will be doing:
As a Craft Mechanical Systems Testing Apprentice you will have the opportunity to combine hands-on technical experience in the workplace whilst completing your academic studies to gain valuable qualifications and competencies to work on live aircraft. You will also have the opportunity to join our Gen A support network who provide support and additional events and opportunities for all Early careers participants.
The three year apprenticeship consists of:
Year 1: You will spend the first 12 months of your apprenticeship based at Coleg Cambria, Deeside, working working towards obtaining:
- NVQ Level 2 diploma in Performing Engineering Operations;
- Advanced Manufacturing Engineering BTEC Level 3 Award;
- Level 2 Essential Skills.
This will allow you to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to enable you to make an immediate contribution when you enter the workforce in the second year.
Years 2 and 3: Time to put your learning to action!
- You will be based at Airbus's Broughton (North Wales) site, working with our expert team of multi skilled ASTG FTI (Flight Test Installation) Electrical Operators, supporting the production testing equipment and systems;
- The tasks will be varied and require you to use different skills in order to complete them successfully;
- You will assist in carrying out routine Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive breakdown repairs on all production testing equipment and systems within the Airbus Broughton plant;
- Through your training you will have the ability to demonstrate effective troubleshooting on all test equipment including hydraulic test rigs, Mechanical test units, flight test installations and 3D printing assets;
- Whilst day to day fault diagnosing within a highly competent team you will maintain technical specialist equipment, such as programmable logic controllers (PLC) and computerised systems.
Additionally you will also attend college on day release, working towards gaining:
- Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma (Engineering Maintenance);
- HNC in Mechanical Technology OR HNC in Electrical and Electronic Technology.
On completion of your 38 month apprenticeship you will become a skilled ASTG Mechanical Operator working within the ASTG/FTI team and if successful you will receive a certificate of modern apprenticeship!
Requirements:
In order to be eligible to this apprenticeship you must achieve a minimum of five GCSEs , which must include the following minimum grades:
- Grade B or 6 in Maths;
- Grade C or 4 in English Language;
- Grade C or 4 in Single Award in Physics OR Grade CC or 44 in Double Award Science;
- Plus 2 other GCSEs at grade C or 4;
- Other qualifications that are equivalent or higher may be considered as an alternative to the additional 2 GCSE's (subject to validation).
To be a successful candidate you need to:
- Have a passion for learning, enjoy hands-on, teamwork and problem solving activities;
- Submit your CV containing your predicted and/or achieved GCSEs grades;

GRADES: Please note for all applicants your offer will be conditional until we receive evidence of the required grades prior to the 31st August 2025, and in addition completing all pre-employment appointments and online forms.
SECURITY CLEARANCE: Eligibility to gain UK SC Security Clearance OR You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).
