ADVANCED MACHINING TECHNICIAN APPRENTICESHIP (LEVEL 3)

If you’re good at problem solving and interested in understanding how things are made and work, a Springfields Advanced Apprenticeship in engineering will equip you with the skills for a successful career in engineering, with promising job prospects across the industry.

What does the apprenticeship involve?

Apprentices are trained to Level 3 as Machining Technicians, supporting mechanical systems within our plant. The program includes study for a BTEC or equivalent technical certificate, practical training on-site at Springfields, and site-specific training in various environments.

The first six months focus on foundational skills such as bench fitting, measuring, and machining. This prepares you for work in different site locations and completing modules like planning machining activities, selecting tools, and working with conventional or CNC machines. The program spans four years, culminating in demonstrating your machining competency and preparing for final assessments.

On-the-job training is provided on-site, guided by experienced professionals and supported by our Training Academy team.

Development areas include:

  • Advanced Machining Technician: Interpret technical drawings, operate complex machining equipment, inspect components, and adjust processes to meet quality standards.
  • The role involves working in the workshop, troubleshooting, repairing, machining, fabricating, and maintaining equipment for the site.

We also offer other engineering apprenticeships, such as:

  • Advanced Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship Level 3: Maintenance involving 3-phase supply, motors, control systems, and instrumentation.
  • Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship Level 3: Hydraulics, pneumatics, drive systems, and machining techniques.

Fabrication/Welding Level 3: Interpret technical drawings, fabricate and assemble metal components, and operate thermal joining equipment.

Qualifications needed:

GCSEs (or equivalent) in maths, English, and science at grades A-C (or 5-9), or predicted to achieve these. Enthusiasm for problem solving and motivation for a career in engineering are essential.

What happens after?

At the end of the four-year apprenticeship, you may apply for a permanent engineering role or pursue further technical qualifications. Roles include shift work once competency is achieved. The apprenticeship begins in August 2024.
