General Summary & Scope
The Master Stylist is responsible for engaging with guests, consulting on hair care needs, and recommending products and services. They deliver quality professional services with an emphasis on the guest’s total look. They support the Experience Manager (SM) and Assistant Services Manager (ASM) through a focus on performance (service sales and productivity), people (guest service), and process (operating procedures and compliance standards). This role requires a passion for the beauty industry, exceptional guest service, and the ability to learn and communicate product knowledge.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform hair services including design, cuts, color, texture, treatments, styling, updos, perms, blowouts, keratin treatments, extensions, makeup applications, and ear piercing (where applicable).
- Meet or exceed a weekly sales goal for hair services and contribute to store goals related to retail and service sales, guest loyalty (including credit), and retail shrink as set by Ulta Beauty.
- Demonstrate products to drive sales and enhance guest service.
- Support execution of in-store events, promotions, and marketing initiatives that deliver an unrivaled guest experience.
- Stay informed on new and existing industry trends, products, and services and be knowledgeable about ingredients and benefits to better serve guests.
- Maintain prompt, regular attendance.
People
- Develop guest relationships through consultations and appropriate retail and service recommendations.
- Serve all guests, including walk-ins, in a timely and efficient manner.
- Partner with skin therapists and the retail team to provide a total-store guest experience.
- Foster professional peer and brand partner relationships to collaboratively deliver exceptional guest experiences.
- Explain guest loyalty benefits, including credit and the Ulta Beauty app, to guests in the salon and salesfloor.
- Attend mandatory trainings and meetings for ongoing professional development.
Process
- Follow Ulta Beauty policies, procedures, and standards.
- Adhere to safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures and state board guidelines.
- Follow service protocols to ensure a consistent and exceptional guest experience.
- Use booking and clientele systems to schedule return services and events.
- Communicate supply needs to the Experience Manager to ensure guest readiness.
- Maintain store operational standards, including cleanliness of the salon, salesfloor, restrooms, backroom, break area, and other assigned areas.
- Adhere to the Ulta Beauty dress code.
- Protect company assets by following loss prevention practices while delivering exceptional guest service.
- Perform other operational tasks as directed.
Job Qualifications
Education
- Cosmetology license
Experience
- Previous relevant work experience is required
Skills
- Proficiency with latest salon techniques for haircutting, coloring, styling, texture, treatments, extensions, makeup, and ear piercing (where applicable) and/or a willingness to develop skills across service categories.
- Proficiency with equipment and chemicals used in technical work.
- Ability to demonstrate, recommend, and sell professional hair care and makeup products.
- Strong communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to build and maintain lasting client relationships.
Special Position Requirements
- Flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Working Conditions
- Continuous mobility during shift; lift and move up to 10 lbs; frequent bending, reaching, and twisting.
- Ability to stand for long periods; continuous coordination and manipulation of objects during shift.
