Are you driven to support and empower young people to thrive? We’re excited to introduce a new opportunity within our Safeguarding and Wellbeing team. As a Safeguarding and Wellbeing Mentor, you’ll be central to providing statutory, pastoral, and welfare support to learners facing challenges such as absence, mental health issues, or home-related problems. This role is designed to respond to the evolving needs of young people, focusing on building confidence, overcoming barriers, and achieving positive outcomes. You should have excellent communication skills, a compassionate approach, and the ability to collaborate with learners, families, and external agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide statutory, pastoral, and welfare support for a designated group of learners, including monitoring attendance and intervening in cases of persistent absence and children missing education.
  • Identify and monitor vulnerable learners, working with college teams to ensure retention and support, maintaining detailed records.
  • Serve as the main contact for learners, parents, and staff to facilitate effective communication and support.
  • Offer Early Help support and collaborate with external agencies to address safeguarding, social, and wellbeing needs.
  • Lead on Personal Education Plans (PEP) for Looked After Children and other vulnerable groups, ensuring compliance with assessment criteria.
  • Support Care Experienced students through participation in reviews and planning meetings.
  • Manage caseloads related to Child in Need Plans and act as Lead Professional on Early Help Assessments.
  • Work with curriculum managers to improve attendance, liaising with parents and external agencies.
  • Implement positive behaviour policies, managing incidents and behavioural issues.
  • Build positive relationships with parents and carers to support learner success.
  • Support learners’ mental health by promoting relevant strategies and referring to appropriate services.
  • Facilitate learner transitions, coordinate with secondary schools, and support pre-enrolment activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of interventions and support needs.
  • Conduct home visits where necessary and undertake training to stay updated on safeguarding procedures.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications

Essential:

  • Level 2 or GCSE 4+ in English and Maths
  • Level 3/A Level qualification or higher
  • Full UK driving license and access to a vehicle
  • Mental Health First Aid qualification or willingness to undertake training

Desirable:

  • Teaching qualification (e.g., Level 3 Cert of Education and Training)
  • First Aid qualification or willingness to obtain

Experience:

  • Experience working with 16-18-year-olds in education
  • Supporting learners and families with safeguarding issues
  • Managing challenging behaviour and attendance
  • Collaborating with cross-college teams and external agencies

Knowledge:

  • Safeguarding, child protection, and early help processes
  • Understanding of young people's wellbeing, safety, and mental health issues
  • Trauma-informed approaches and mental health awareness

IT Skills:

  • Knowledge of safeguarding systems and Microsoft Office
