Hays HR are delighted to be partnering exclusively with Nippon Gasses UK & Ireland to recruit the new HR Manager for the UK & Ireland.
Your new company: Nippon Gases, one of the leading industrial and medical gases companies in Europe, is part of the Nippon Sanso Holdings Corporation, which has over 100 years of experience. They operate in more than 30 countries with over 20,000 employees worldwide. In the UK & Ireland, they have over 150 employees, 3 CO2 terminals, 1 CO2 filling station, sales offices, and 3 dry ice production plants. The UK head office, where this role will be based, is in Immingham, North East Lincolnshire.
Your new role: Due to retirement, this role is a stand-alone and generalist HR Manager for the UK & Ireland region. You will be responsible for providing the necessary support in the HR area to the businesses, reporting to both the UK & Ireland Business Manager and functionally into the HR Director of Europe. You will proactively look after the site’s team, champion the company culture & values, and manage all aspects of HR. This is a senior role as part of the Senior Leadership Team, operating at both a strategic and operational level, managing activities in the following areas:
- Providing leadership and support to the employee HR life cycle: from hiring, developing, performance reviews to exiting, using the Corporate, European or local policies and practices, always in line with local legislation.
- Work with the HR Europe team on the development and introduction of new HR systems that bring added value to the businesses.
- Recommending and implementing compensation and benefit policies that ensure the attraction and retention of highly qualified and motivated employees.
- Providing leadership in organisational development through market-driven forecasting model and capacity planning.
- In charge of industrial relations from the HR side.
- Provide management with advisory support regarding effective human resources practices.
- Responsible for coordinating all HR activities in payroll, payroll related plans, HR reporting and forecasting.
- Responsible for the roll out of Nippon Gases Europe talent development programs and trainings.
- Be the key person in the region in the use of the HR ERP, People Hub.
- Provide strategic guidance to management on employee relations issues.

What you’ll need to succeed: A relevant post-graduate and/or CIPD qualification desired – or of suitably equivalent level experience. Ideally, manufacturing and trade union environment background – or similar blue-collar sector industry. A strong HR knowledge base and skill set, with previous experience operating in a stand-alone position within a high performing growth organisation. Project management and change management skills. Knowledge and experience of UpToDate UK employment law. Experience of managing Employee Relations and Trade Unions. Senior leadership skills such as Conflict Management, Developing Employees at all levels, Priority Setting, Process Management, Timely Decision Making, Excellent communication skills. Ability to travel - geographical area covered in UK & Ireland.
What you’ll get in return: A competitive salary is on offer, dependent on your experience, qualifications and skill set – £70,000 to £75,000. Company Car and Bonus. Holiday entitlement of 25 days (plus bank holidays), plus holiday buy/sell scheme up to 5 days. Private medical insurance (employee but can opt to buy additional cover for dependents). Pension – Defined contribution plan (employers’ contribution +2% of employee contribution with a maximum of 8% employers’ contribution). Hybrid working – mix of WFH (maximum 2-3 days a week), the rest onsite at HQ or travel to other sites in the UK & Ireland (15% of the time – normally day travel).
