The successful candidate will be responsible to provide the safest and highest quality care to patients undergoing cardiac related procedures in the cardiac catheter lab whilst coordinating and overseeing nursing practice. He/She will be required to provide support to the Cardiac Catheter Lab Manager and deputize in their absence and taking responsibility for the supervision of staff adhering to policies and procedures that operate within the department. He/She will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as he/she will be required to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary management team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Interventional Cardiology and Pacing with evidence of leadership skills and experience with mentoring and teaching junior staff and students. Support will be given to develop leadership and management skills with the provision of an in-house course and also externally with our partner universities.

Main duties of the job:

  • The purpose of the post holder is to provide clinical leadership to the nursing and other members of MDT in the cardiac catheter lab which includes acting as a team leader and expert practitioner, coordinating, guiding and advising the team in the provision of optimum patient care.
  • The post holder will be able to provide and deliver a high standard of nursing care to patients undergoing elective and emergency procedures such as diagnostic coronary angiogram, PCI, permanent pacemaker and other cardiac related procedures in the cardiac catheter lab.
  • She/He/They will work closely with the Catheter Lab Manager and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of nursing practice.
  • She/He/They will be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of staff by acting as a mentor with the support of their senior colleagues.
  • She/He/They will also be expected to work within the cardiac catheter lab as a scrub nurse or circulating nurse and will be a patient advocate during the procedure.

The post holder will be professionally accountable for the maintenance of standards and professional practice as set by the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and behaviour and relevant professional guidelines. To regularly coordinate and take charge of the cardiac catheter lab and take responsibility for ensuring the coordination and direct provision of high standard of patient care. To act as a deputy in the absence of the cardiac catheter lab manager. To support the development and implementation of audit, quality and risk management initiatives. To participate in monitoring standards of clinical practice, audit, research and teaching to continually improve standards of care and patient experience. To teach and act as mentor, assessor or preceptor to junior staff or student nurses.

Person specification:

  • Nursing Degree/Diploma
  • NMC Registration
  • 2 years Cardiac Catheter Lab Experience
  • Specialist clinical knowledge across a range of wide procedures to include a range of procedures
  • Completion of a CPD cardiology related Courses e.g. Cardiac Care Course
  • Advance life support Training

Experience:

  • Experience in scrubbing and circulating for cath lab cases
  • Experience in clinical team leadership
  • Experience in preparing patients and recovering patients from cath lab procedures
  • Experience in covering pre-assessment clinics

Skills and knowledge:

  • Empathetic attitude towards staff and patients
  • Ability to manage the patient procedure lists and prioritise urgent patients
  • Ability to deputise in the absence of the Catheter Lab Manager
  • Knowledge of skill mix and its application to roster allocation
