Position Overview

As a Petco Certified Dog Trainer, you will play a vital role in furthering Petco’s mission as a Pet Health and Wellness company by enhancing the bond between pet parents and their dog companions. You will provide one‑on‑one training sessions, group classes, and give advice on basic training, environmental management, and customized training plans. You will also engage guests to provide 360‑degree personalized solutions for their pets and pet parents and recommend healthy nutrition, world‑class services and essential supplies.

Position Responsibilities

The Dog Trainer role consists of two core responsibilities.

Core Responsibility 1: Provide World‑Class Dog Training Services

• Attend and successfully pass Petco’s 6‑week Dog Trainer Instructor Program.
• Complete all assigned Workday Learning modules and DTIP Student Workbook materials.
• Recommend and sell appropriate dog training classes, training, and supplies.
• Keep accurate records of training sessions, progress, and pet parents’ feedback.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
• Work cross‑functionally with the grooming and veterinary teams.
• Complete and apply ongoing training programs to maintain expertise.

Core Responsibility 2: Provide 360‑Degree Solutions for Petco Guests

• Provide an outstanding guest experience through active engagement and recommendation.
• Generate future business by understanding the guest and their pets.
• Demonstrate knowledge of animal health, welfare, and proper handling.
• Support the Pet Care Center in achieving its performance goals.
• Ensure merchandise is stocked, priced, and displayed.
• Complete cash register transactions and support guests with OMNI shopping.
• Adhere to operational guidelines, policies, and procedures.
• Promote teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.
• Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.
• Refer guest inquiries to the Leader on Duty as needed.

Other Essential Duties

• Utilize selling behaviors to provide an amazing guest experience.
• Contribute to a safe environment in accordance with safety protocols.
• Be a part of a collaborative culture centered on pets’ health and wellness.
• Engage in ongoing career development and growth.

Certification Requirements

• Stage 1: Complete the Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP) to become Petco Certified Dog Trainer.
• Stage 2: Run and grow the dog training business at a Pet Care Center with marketing support.
• Stage 3: Complete the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog.
• Accelerated training may apply for candidates with prior experience.

Basic Qualifications

• Passion for animal care, training, and welfare.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to handle and work with dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds safely.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
• Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Familiarity with computer systems and software for training records and scheduling.

• None

Salary Range

$12.00 – $19.50 per hour; start rate $15.00 per hour.
