The Sun is the biggest news brand in the UK - and still growing - with a talented, diverse team who publish the best coverage of news, sport, lifestyle and showbiz in print and digital.
Your Role: The position involves subbing and revision. On some days you will be responsible for revising print copy and on others you will sub copy to fix spelling or grammatical errors, rewriting material to make it tight, punchy, to length and in house style. You'll also write brilliant headlines.
Day to day:
- Working on the middle bench when required.
- Checking the work of sub-editors and making sure we hit every deadline.
- Also working as a sub when required, checking facts to ensure stories are accurate and legally safe, consulting with reporter/writer and desk heads to resolve issues with print copy, keeping chief subs informed of changes that arise.
- Suggest new angles.
- Maintain a wide knowledge of current affairs and trends through reading various titles as well as utilising other media platforms daily.
- Work across all four print editions of The Sun - London, Scotland, Ireland and Ulster - as required.
- Flexibility to work on a rota across a 7-day week.
What we are looking for from you:
- We are looking for a talented Assistant Chief Sub-Editor, who is well organised and has the ability to work under pressure.
- Subbing experience on either a national or regional daily newspaper.
- Creative, flexible and calm under pressure with the ability to turn their hand to News and Features.
- A broad knowledge of current affairs and popular culture is essential.
- Awareness of legal and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent grasp of the English language.
- Able to work under pressure to tight and frequent deadlines.
- Well organised.
- Adaptability – able to adapt style depending on the story.
