Position Description
Position Summary
The Department of Computing, Mathematics and Physics in the School of Science, Engineering and Health at Messiah University invites applications for a part-time/adjunct faculty position to teach one or more courses in computer science, including Programming for User Interaction ( CIS 281: fall, MWF 10-10:50 am), Introduction to Mobile Application Design ( CIS 315; spring, T-Th 10:30-11:45 am), and Interactive 3D Graphics ( CIS 487; spring, MWF 12-12:50 pm). Please indicate in the application which courses you are qualified to teach.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate courses in introductory and advanced computer science on an as-needed basis; Create and maintain a course page in Canvas LMS structure; Design and grade assessments of student learning; respond to students in a timely manner via weekly office hours and/or email.
Courses meet face to face for 2.5-hours/week for 15 weeks either in three 50-minute lectures ( MWF ) or two 75-minute lectures (T-Th).
Qualifications
Master’s degree in a computing field or equivalent professional certification. Previous experience teaching at the university level is preferred. Candidates must evidence the potential for strong classroom teaching and positive student interaction and mentorship. The Program
The department offers undergraduate computing majors in computer science, cybersecurity, data science, digital media and software development as well as minors in computer science, cybersecurity, data science, and web development.
The department’s cybersecurity program is recognized by the US Department of Defense as a Center of Academic Excellence in CyberDefense Education ( CAE – CDE ).
The Department
The Department of Computing, Mathematics and Physics employs 4 full-time CS faculty members, including one in cybersecurity education, 6 full-time faculty in mathematics/statistics, and 2 full-time physics faculty. The department serves a wide range of majors in CS, Cybersecurity, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Physics, in addition to providing service courses for other fields of study, primarily engineering. CS faculty pursue professional interests in cybersecurity, web development, database applications, computer simulations, programming and programming languages, and ethics of technology. The mission of the CS-Cybersecurity program is mentoring students and preparing them professionally, personally and spiritually for impact and community, a growth mindset, and a strong foundation in the processes and applied practices of Cybersecurity/CS. Core attributes we seek to instill in our students include a Christ-like character, competence in the discipline, preparation for lifelong learning, perseverance, and strong communication and relational skills.
