Intertek is searching for a Fire Apparatus Test Technician to join our Building & Construction team in our York, PA office. This is a fantastic opportunity to grow a versatile career in Mobile Fire Apparatus Testing!
The Building & Construction team provides assurance, testing, inspection, and certification services and building science solutions to deliver Total Quality Assurance to the built environment.
The Fire Apparatus Test Technician is responsible for testing and inspections of the following assets for our clients:
- Fire hose
- Ground ladders
- Apparatus-mounted and portable pumps
- Hose appliances and nozzles
What you'll do:
- Fire hose: Unpacking apparatus-mounted and station reserve hose and laying out on the test site, labeling and identifying hose details for reporting, visual inspections for defects of the hose, hydrostatic testing of the fire hose, draining and cleaning (if necessary) the tested hose, repacking apparatus-mounted hose better than as-found, replacing station reserve hose, generating detailed reports for NFPA 1962 hose testing.
- Ground ladders: Unloading of extension, roof, folding, and multipurpose ground ladders from the apparatus, labeling and identifying ladder details for reporting, visual inspections for defects of the ladders and their components, stress testing of the ladders and its hardware, placing the ladders back on the apparatus exactly as found, generating detailed reports for NFPA 1932 ground ladder testing.
- Apparatus-mounted and portable pumps: Performing standardized pump inspections and testing in accordance with NFPA 1911 Chapter 21, generating detailed reports for NFPA 1911 Chapter 21 pump tests.
- Hose appliances and nozzles: Unloading of hose appliances and nozzles from the apparatus, inspection and testing of appliances in accordance with NFPA 1962, generating detailed reports for NFPA 1962 nozzle/appliance testing.
What it takes to be successful in this role:
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Firefighting background and certificates are preferred, but not a requirement.
- Current or past firefighting experience is preferred, with a focus on engine operations, pump operations, and essentials of firefighting.
- Technicians are expected to have a safety-first mindset.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.
- Ability to work outdoors for a long duration, and have a willingness to learn, work hard, and be a part of a test team.
- Fire Apparatus Testing can be demanding based on environmental conditions, fire department inventory, and proximity to the test lab.
- Flexible daytime scheduling is required as complications during the day can lengthen a standard working day.
- Travel to test sites are a daily task and test sites that are greater than 120 miles from York, PA will require overnight stays that include per diem.
- Overnight travel is less than 5% of the time currently.
- Towing/trailering experience and can pass a DOT physical exam is expected.
- Valid driver's license and reliable driving record (required).
