About The Business Unit

We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Our large and diverse team of M&E engineers are responsible for delivering some of the largest and most complex rail, road and energy tunnel schemes in the UK and overseas. We have a strong heritage of delivering excellence and providing innovative solutions to our customers.

Overview Of The Role

We require an enthusiastic and motivated person to support the growth and development of our Tunnel Systems MEP team. Oversee and evaluate the technical, quality, and engineering aspects of the work to ensure they align with the delivery schedule and requirements. The Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer (public health) role spans the entire project lifecycle, from concept design to construction, including specifying and designing public health services for rail, tunnels, and stations within transport infrastructures. This involves detailed design calculations, selection of appropriate materials and equipment, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations. The Senior Principal Engineer will lead the design of a range of tunnel systems including tunnel drainage, pumped drainage, fire mains and fixed firefighting systems.

Key Responsibilities And Duties Include:

  • Leading project teams of engineers and technicians
  • Managing and coordinating multi-disciplinary project teams
  • Production and delivery of reliable design solutions, reports, specifications, and drawings
  • Presenting technical solutions to clients and external stakeholders
  • Actively participating in design team meetings to ensure adherence to agreed design principles
  • Coordinating with other engineering disciplines to integrate mechanical/public health systems seamlessly into the overall project design
  • Input into bid management and business development
  • Assist in the mentoring, management and technical development of engineers

The successful candidate will join a well-developed team which includes a wide range of experience from principal engineers, senior engineers, graduates, and apprentices. Passing on knowledge and developing younger staff is a fundamental part of our team culture to which this role will contribute.

Candidate specification

The candidate will hold the following essential academic and professional qualifications and experience:

  • Educated to degree level with a membership of a relevant professional organisation (i.e., IMechE, CIBSE)
  • Chartered Engineer (with equivalent/relevant experience)

Role

You will have experience of a similar role in an engineering and construction environment with full exposure to major project work. Ideally you will be able to demonstrate a mixture of the following:

  • Experience in preparing tender drawings and specifications for: Foul water ejector systems, Surface water pumped system, Above-ground soil and waste systems, Hot and cold-water systems, Gas detection system, Compressed air systems, Fire hydrant / suppression systems, Sprinkler/hose reel systems
  • Experience in working on large engineering and construction projects, with an experience of design and construction across a range of transportation projects
  • Understanding of engineering processes on multidisciplinary design and build contracts
  • Experience of working with and applying the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills
  • Proven ability to work within tight deadlines and act on own initiative where appropriate
  • Build successful relationships with others - within the wider Mott MacDonald company and with a multi-discipline design environment
  • Proactive attitude, a willingness to engage and adapt, and apply previous skills/experience to new (potentially unfamiliar) challenges
  • Familiar with common data environment principles
  • Familiar with engineering software such as Bluebeam, Hevacomp, Micro Drainage, Revit and ProjectWise
  • A good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Engineering design development within a BIM environment

The successful candidate will be based in our Croydon office. Depending on project requirements, there may also be a need to travel to other locations (company or client, office or site) within the UK or overseas.
