Responsible for promoting a positive health and safety culture throughout the Business, keeping employees safe, preventing harm and ill health. This role will develop, maintain and improve Safety, Health and the Environment (SHE) standards within the business in accordance with current legislation and company policies and procedures. Ensure the business, Managers and employees comply with all SHE legislation and that SHE policies and practices are adhered to in the office and on site.

The primary function of the role is to facilitate the day to day operations of SHE and contribute to the planning, implementing, monitoring and reviewing of protective and preventative safety measures through working with managers, employees, site operatives and the safety representatives at site or planning for site operation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Reports directly to the Senior SHE Manager with a dotted line reporting to the Site Managing Director.
  • Working closely with the Site Managers and Project Managers on all matters in relation to SHE.
  • To provide specialist advice for all matters relating to the statutory requirement concerning SHE factors to Managers, employees and safety representatives.
  • Supporting the compliance with the implementation and maintenance of procedures to meet the requirements of ISO14001 and ISO45001.
  • Become the NERS Assessing Officer.
  • Providing the company with statistics and reports in relation to SHE.
  • Compliance with the quality system (ISO9001), including issuing and tracking corrective action requests following internal and external SHE audits.
  • Co-ordination with SHE Legal Advisor in relation to work related claims.
  • Promoting a positive SHE culture and continuous improvement within the Company and developing SHE policies and procedures to support the business.
  • Supporting HR to ensure the company complies to all legal health surveillance requirements, working with the Occupational Health provider to ensure timely completion of medicals.
  • Assist Managers and Supervisors in the maintenance and development of risk assessments to ensure they are relevant and up-to-date, eliminating and reducing risk to as low as reasonably practicable.
  • Assisting with the assessment of training requirements and provision of training to site employees regarding SHE, including toolbox talks.
  • Carry out accident and incident investigations, providing reports and identifying root causes and implementing action plans to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Sharing lessons learnt from accidents, dangerous occurrences and significant near misses with other group businesses.
  • Advising on a range of specialist areas, including fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.
  • Monitor and control to ensure that the PPE issued is compliant and being used correctly.
Qualifications:
  • CMIOSH, or working towards it and currently Grad IOSH.
  • Formal training - NEBOSH/IOSH/IEMA or CIEH.
  • Previous experience of working on HV/LV site is essential however civil/substation experience with exposure to HV/LV would be considered.
  • Exposure of BS EN ISO 9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001.
  • Have attended a CITB SMSTS course within the last five years would be beneficial.
Knowledge & Experience:
  • Experience of working under CDM environments.
  • Previous experience of working as a Principal Contractor.
  • Hold the necessary CSCS card for site operation work.
  • Experience of performing SHE audits to confirm compliance.
  • Excellent understanding of current SHE laws and legislation.
  • Experience of working with a SHE management system.
  • Experience in leading diverse teams with a broad range of skills and technical knowledge.
  • Self-motivated with a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to managing SHE with a willingness to lead and learn.
  • The attitude and will to want to make a difference and to support other team members in the office and on site.
