The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the independent regulator for work-related health and safety. Our purpose is to protect people and the environment – we save lives. By making content clear and accessible, you’ll help millions of people understand how to stay safe, comply with the law and manage risk in a sensible way. This can be providing smaller businesses with good content that’s clear on the actions they can take to manage risk themselves. At the opposite end of the scale, this also means tackling the most serious risks to our society.
We are currently recruiting for a Content Designer in our Web and Design Unit. This is an exciting opportunity for designers who are enthusiastic about all forms of design and want to make a positive impact in helping to protect people from death, injury and ill-health. Our ambition is to produce a best-in-class web presence that delivers HSE guidance, content and services that meet user needs. The main focus is on HSE’s work to deliver guidance and services on building safety regulation.
Part-time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Job Description
- Create, test and iterate user-centred content, making complex language and processes easier to understand.
- Use analytics, user feedback, and user research to evaluate and improve content.
- Build relationships with stakeholders (subject matter experts) to understand their goals and work with them to improve user journeys and content.
- Maintain relationships with other user-centred design professionals in HSE and across-government.
- Help with quality assuring content design work, undertaking 2nd checks and content 'crits'.
- Identify emerging issues, trends and opportunities which might impact or benefit your work.
- Pitch your concepts and solutions, and negotiate and agree briefs and schedules.
- Work with others to identify and agree criteria for monitoring the performance and impact of content.
This post can be based in any of the advertised locations; however, the team is based in our Bootle office and there is the expectation that you will attend the Bootle office at least once per week or as business requires. As this position may be based at two different working locations, the successful candidate will be subject to multiple placed working and will therefore be able to claim their travel expenses for commuting to Bootle.
Person Specification
The role requires a practitioner with content design experience who will define and assure best practice, making sure our content aligns to HSE’s strategy and objectives, while meeting the needs of our users. You will work with the content design team, service teams and policy to produce guidance, content and services. This job has been mapped to the Digital, Data and Technology Profession Capability Framework - GOV.UK and will use the knowledge of Government Digital Service ways of working and design roles.
Essential Skills and Criteria
- Experience of working as a content designer or in a similar role.
- Ability to translate complex or technical concepts into clear and useful content.
- Experience of using data, user feedback, and user research to improve content or a product.
- Ability to work on multiple projects with numerous stakeholders, and adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
- Some experience of digital accessibility standards.
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to adapt your communication style to work in teams with digital and non-digital professionals.
