We are seeking an individual experienced in training delivery and development to join the Software Sustainability Institute's (SSI) training team and help researchers and research software engineers harness the power of software for research. The post is based at the University of Manchester in the Human Computer Systems group at the Department of Computer Science, but will work closely with the rest of the SSI's distributed team and our collaborating partners and communities in the UK and internationally.
The successful candidate will have a good understanding of the role of software in research and the role that people who develop research software have in the generation of research results, and the needs for better software education. They will have experience and pedagogical skills in delivering and organising effective training in computational and data skills, and tools and practices for open and reproducible computational research, such as those endorsed by the international training community The Carpentries. They will have a BSc or a PhD in a course with a significant computing aspect, or equivalent experience.
The post is being recruited at Grade 6 (where the post holder will help and participate on tasks) or Grade 7 (where the post holder will lead on tasks). Our team: Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) The SSI was founded in 2010 as the first organisation in the world dedicated to improving software in research on the premise that helping individuals and institutions understand the vital role that software plays in research would accelerate progress in every field of scientific and academic endeavour. The SSI is distributed between Edinburgh (Directorate, project office, events and communications), Southampton (policy and software) and Manchester (community and training), but the Institute staff works cohesively across geographical boundaries on cross-team projects. The focus of the training team is on the Institute's priority areas in the space of skills and training; recognition and rewards for software, career paths and reproducible research.
