Are you a hands-on biomedical or mechanical engineer ready to make an impact in medical device innovation? Join us as a Research Assistant in Medical Devices to help develop a cutting-edge variable-stiffness catheter designed to improve cardiovascular procedures.

Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death worldwide. Each year, more than 100,000 percutaneous coronary interventions are performed in the UK. However, standard catheters lack the flexibility needed to safely navigate complex vascular pathways while remaining stiff enough to support interventions. Our project aims to change that. You’ll contribute to the development of a novel catheter system that dynamically adjusts its stiffness, addressing one of the major limitations of current interventional cardiology tools.

What you’ll do:

  • Identify design requirements through consultation with clinicians, literature search, and testing.
  • Iteratively design, fabricate, and test a variable stiffness catheter.
  • Conduct in-vivo animal trials.
  • Participate in technology commercialisation through the University’s Commercialisation Journey programme.
  • Document the R&D work by writing technical reports or research papers.
  • Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Who we’re looking for:

You’re a researcher or graduate who’s ready to apply your technical skills to a real-world medical challenge. You’ll need:

  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical & electronics engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Practical experience in mechanical design, device prototyping, or mechatronics systems.
  • A proactive, organised, and self-driven mindset with strong problem-solving skills.
  • A keen interest in translational research, medtech innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Why join us?

  • Be part of a transformative medical technology project with real clinical and commercial potential.
  • Gain experience across the full product development cycle, from concept to in-vivo testing to commercialisation.
  • Receive mentorship and training from academic, clinical, and commercial experts.
  • Develop new skills in medical device R&D, regulatory science, and market engagement.
  • Work in a collaborative, forward-thinking university environment focused on impactful innovation.
