Overview:
This is an exciting opportunity to lead an Energy business area for Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. The role is tasked with leading the delivery of our ambitions in England & Wales with National Grid’s New Infrastructure business. The role will include operational delivery, strategic growth, and work winning, across core transmission disciplines of overhead lines, substations, and under-ground cable.
The role is being created as we are restructuring our team after securing a significant pipeline of work with National Grid, as a delivery partner on the Great Grid Upgrade.
You will be experienced within the civil infrastructure sector as a Business Unit Director, General Manager, or you could be an ambitious Operations or Project Director with exceptional leadership skills looking for a role which will be key to building growth in line with the business strategy.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Strategy, People, and Customer:
- Strategic Contribution: Contribute to the formulation of an overall strategy for the business unit as part of the senior management team and participate in continuous decision-making.
- Sector Road Map: Develop a clear sector roadmap to achieve our vision and a sector skills strategy with support from HR.
- Capability Development: Enhance the capability and capacity of our team to ensure readiness for delivery and business growth.
- Relationship Building: Foster effective working relationships with support functions and develop new customer relationships through networking, while maintaining and growing existing customer relationships.
- OHL, UGC and Substations Strategy: Refresh and develop an investment case/delivery strategy for our core disciplines over the next five years.
- Work Winning:
- Bid Strategies: Actively source and win new work by devising appropriate bid strategies in collaboration with the Pre-contract Director and pre-construction team.
- Project Pipeline: Secure cabling, OHL and substations projects with National Grid.
- Perfect Delivery: Achieve perfect delivery on secured projects.
- Responsible Business Commitments: Fulfil our commitments to responsible business practices.
- Operational Performance:
- Operations Strategy: Formulate and communicate the operations strategy for the our New Infrastructure team, providing leadership to ensure it is implemented at all levels to achieve key results in health and safety, quality, timeliness, financial performance, and customer satisfaction.
- SHEQ Leadership: Provide effective Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) leadership to your team, customers, and supply chain.
- Financial Performance: Achieve or exceed tendered margin and cash flow on all projects.
- Performance Review: Regularly review business performance, making necessary changes to people and processes to achieve targets.
- P&L Accountability: Be accountable for the Profit and Loss (P&L) of for National Grid’s New Infrastructure directorate.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Extensive experience in the civil infrastructure sector.
- Proven leadership skills as a Business Unit Director, General Manager, or an Operations Director with a strong track record.
- Experience of successfully managing P&L’s in excess of £50m p.a.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to contribute to overall business strategy.
- Strong relationship-building skills and a network within the industry.
- Experience in operational delivery and performance management.
- Ability to lead and develop teams to achieve business growth and operational excellence

About our Energy business
We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.
Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair and refurbishment services.
