Tasks and Qualifications: Senior Test Engineer Approved By (Title): Paul Owen (Senior Director, Software Engineering) Location Stockport Purpose of Role The Senior Test Engineer is responsible for test design, implementation, execution, and reporting across the software lifecycle, focusing strongly on System and Acceptance Testing levels. This role contributes directly to software quality by verifying functional and non-functional requirements, automating test scenarios, and supporting the continuous improvement of test processes. The Senior Test Engineer plays a pivotal role in requirement analysis, traceability, exploratory testing, and technical mentorship, collaborating with other stakeholders to contribute to the shared responsibility for the quality of deliverables. Reporting to Head of Software Testing Experience Levels Minimum of 5 years of hands-on software testing experience. Experience mentoring others or leading test activities is desirable. Certification in software testing (ISTQB or equivalent) is preferred. Principal Accountabilities Test Design & Specification: Collaborate with stakeholders to review and interpret requirements for testability and clarity. Develop detailed and traceable test specifications and test cases that align with functional, business and performance criteria. Apply diverse test design techniques, including boundary value analysis, state transition, decision tables, and error guessing, to optimise coverage. Ensure the test design aligns with the V-Model structure and FURPS requirement categories. Test Execution & Verification: Execute manual and automated test cases for functional, regression, and non-functional testing. Conduct exploratory testing using structured charters to identify edge case failures. Monitor, analyse and log test results; perform initial triage and communicate findings to developers. Validate fixes and changes with retesting and regression cycles. Traceability & Quality Assurance: Create and maintain requirement-to-test case traceability matrices. Support defect lifecycle management from identification to closure, ensuring clear replication steps and prioritisation. Participate in formal peer reviews of test artefacts and collaborate on root cause analysis. Documentation & Reporting: Author and maintain high-quality documentation, including test plans, test execution records and test summary reports. Track testing metrics and KPIs to provide evidence of progress, stability, and risk. Capture lessons learned and support the refinement of test approaches. Mentorship & Collaboration: Mentor junior to mid-level test engineers, providing guidance and support for their professional growth through knowledge sharing initiatives, and one-on-one coaching sessions, contributing to the overall expertise of the testing team. Contribute to planning and coordination meetings to ensure that test activities align with delivery goals. Collaborate closely with software engineers, analysts, and test managers to share insights and contribute to shared responsibility for quality outcomes. Knowledge & Experience Required Proficiency in developing and maintaining automated tests using frameworks like Selenium, Behave, or FitNesse. Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and tools (e.g., Jenkins, Git, Docker). Familiarity with performance testing tools and techniques. Strong problem-solving skills and technical aptitude. Proficiency in working with Linux-based environments is required, including navigation, file handling, log analysis and basic scripting. Proven experience in API testing, including designing, developing and executing API tests using tools such as Postman, or similar. Beneficial: Experience in high-throughput or real-time systems, ideally within logistics, Warehouse Management Systems/Warehouse Control Systems, or Supply Chain domains.
