Job Summary: Responsible for evaluation, planning, directing and administering pediatrics outpatient therapy modalities of treatment as prescribed by a licensed physician. Coordinates, delegates and supervises responsibilities assigned to supportive staff (CNA, COTA, OTA-L, etc.). Participates in operational aspects of department, maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in QAPI activities. Provides input in formulating budget, assists in evaluating department performance versus budget controls and takes appropriate action to remain in budget guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Occupational Therapist (OT) is responsible for assessment, planning, and collaboration with the certifying Physician.
  • As a related service provider, the OT provides appropriate intervention to meet the individual student’s needs in acquiring independence in functional skills to participate in and benefit from the educational environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to collaborate with parents, educators, and other school support staff as needed.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to work independently are necessities.
  • Complete evaluations, develop measurable goals, plan and implement therapeutic interventions at intervals determined to be educationally relevant.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-services.
  • Interprets physician referrals and evaluates the patient's physical, perceptual, cognitive, social, and vocational abilities and their impact on the patient's activities of daily living.
  • Establishes a plan of care and implements individual treatment based on evaluation results, functional goals and by utilizing appropriate techniques.
  • Provides and/or fabricates assistive devices and/or splints to enhance patient’s functional independence.
  • Monitors and evaluates outcomes and appropriately adjusts individualized treatment plan based on patient’s response, and provides status updates to physicians.
  • Identifies factors affecting patient’s physical and psychosocial comfort and attends to these needs.
  • Plans for and completes patient discharge including providing written home programs, patient/family teaching, referral for community services, and ordering equipment.
  • Completes all required documentation including patient progress notes, daily notes, team conference reports, discharge summaries, and records patient care and progress as well as daily statistics, billing, and scheduling.
  • Applies insurance guidelines regarding authorization and number of visits.
  • Supervise, monitor and evaluate the job performance of any assigned occupational therapy assistant or student as required by the States Board of Medicine.
  • Make recommendations regarding adaptive equipment needs and maintain an inventory of therapy equipment and supplies.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited occupational therapy program following successful completion of all fieldwork requirements.
  • Must have passed the Occupational Therapy National Certification Examination and be licensed by the States Board of Medicine.
  • Current NBCOT license.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy required.
  • Minimum of one year of pediatric work experience is preferred.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: This person should have basic word processing skills (MS Word) and be able to use a variety of office and other equipment relevant to performing the essential duties of the position.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Physical Requirements: Bending or squatting to speak/interact with children on their eye-level, lifting of children or heavy objects. Must be able to operate a variety of automated office machines and other equipment (e.g. computers, copier, wheel chairs, etc). Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; position requires walking, standing, reaching, fingering, stooping, lifting, etc. Will lift no more than forty pounds independently. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to one hundred and fifty pounds with assistance, to include the weight of the person being supported as needed.

Other Skills and Abilities: Strong written and verbal communication skills; strong facilitation skills; ability to work well with others; ability to responsibly and confidentially handle sensitive student information. CPR and First Aid Certification may be required.

Additional and/or Program Specific Responsibilities: A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and approved automobile insurance are required for this position.
