Mechanical Engineers can work on everything from the individual components of a device, to large scale machinery, complete industrial plants, or a corporate vehicle fleet. Mechanical Engineers are often sought after in almost every industry in some form. General responsibilities tend to include:

  • Design and implement products and solutions based on the relevant business field
  • Develop and integrate new technology and tools in an efficient way
  • Monitor and improve production processes
  • Work with subcontractors, customers, manufacturing departments to identify and resolve complex problems
  • Manage projects as required
  • Design production processes
  • Design and implement modifications to prototype products
  • Monitor and commission new systems
  • Design and develop new designs
  • Manage costs for new products, process, and modifications

To be successful as a Mechanical Engineer, the following skills, qualifications, and qualities are useful:

  • Degree in a relevant engineering field (agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering, for example)
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant or supporting field
  • Engineering Council accredited qualifications
  • Excellent scientific and technical knowledge
