The role: Technical Support Engineer – Linux Hosting Environment (web hosting, cPanel)

Location: Near to Preston, Lancashire

Salary: £28k to £31k basic + benefits

Working requirements (2 possible shifts):

  • 1st option: Monday to Friday - 0900 to 1700 shift is fully onsite in the offices (non-negotiable)
  • 2nd option: Monday to Friday - 1600 till midnight shift is to be home-based, after an initial period onsite for necessary training etc.

No relocation/sponsorship available - you must already live within a commutable distance of Preston, Lancashire.

I’m hiring an experienced Technical Support Engineer with proven Linux, Web hosting & ideally some cPanel experience to join a long-established web hosting / cloud services provider. This is a permanent role with training delivered at the offices near to Preston, Lancashire - the Mon to Fri 0900-1700 shift is onsite / the 1600-midnight shift will be home-based after the initial training period onsite. This is not an entry-level role; I’m looking for someone who’s confident working with Linux command line environments and has a solid understanding of web hosting infrastructure and customer support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide Level 1 & 2 technical support to clients via help desk and phone
  • Troubleshoot issues with web hosting services, DNS, SSL, email, etc.
  • Analyse server logs and alerts from internal monitoring systems
  • Guide clients on how to manage tasks themselves where appropriate
  • Update and maintain knowledge base and support documentation
  • Support with tasks such as account migrations and backups
  • Handle abuse tickets and support with basic application-level troubleshooting

What You’ll Need:

  • Solid experience in a root-level Linux environment via command line
  • Understanding of web hosting fundamentals – web servers, email, DNS, SSL, IPs, firewalls
  • Ability to manage and install Linux packages (RPMs, software builds etc.)
  • You’ll be a strong, confident and positive communicator – written and verbal
  • You’ll be able to work independently as well as part of a small, remote team

Nice to Have:

  • Relevant experience with cPanel at root level
  • Scripting skills (Bash, PHP, Perl etc.)
  • Basic networking and TCP/IP knowledge
  • Exposure to virtualisation platforms
