Research Assistant / Associate (Fixed Term)

Join the Division of Virology at the University of Cambridge as a post‑doctoral Research Assistant / Associate. The position is a fixed‑term appointment of 10 months starting 01 February 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter) with a six‑month probationary period. The role is funded by the Wellcome Trust.

  • Salary : Grade 5 (£33,002‑£35,608) if the PhD has not yet been awarded; amended to Grade 7 (£37,694‑£46,049) upon PhD completion.

Responsibilities

  • Design, conduct and analyse molecular virology and cell biology studies on microglia–neuron crosstalk in HIV CNS infection.
  • Perform human cell culture, including neuronal cell lines and primary neurons, T cells, and macrophages.
  • Apply molecular biology, proteomics, assay development and optimisation techniques; design imaging protocols.
  • Work both independently and as part of a collaborative team, contributing to research objectives and publication preparation.
  • Present findings at group meetings and external conferences; write up work for publication.
  • Maintain laboratory safety standards (BSL3 experience preferred).

Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field (or near submission) with a strong track record in molecular virology and cellular biology.
  • Significant experience in human cell culture, particularly neuronal lines and primary cells.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology, proteomics, assay development, and advanced imaging techniques.
  • Knowledge of and experience working in a BSL3 laboratory is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
