Our Healthcare team is a vibrant specialist department. We provide advice on all aspects of healthcare law, including clinical negligence, EL/PL, patient safety, human rights and mental health. The ethos of the team is to work hard for our clients so that we secure the right outcome for them. We continuously strive to improve our technical skills and enhance our ability to meet the clients’ needs as they evolve. The healthcare sector is fast moving and the challenge of working for our clients provides very interesting work.

We are seeking a qualified Solicitor or Cilex to join our team. The successful candidate will assist partners in running the defence of healthcare claims including delegating to junior lawyers.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist the partners and manage own caseload of defendant medical malpractice claims of varying value and complexity – from notification through to trial.
  • Liaise with the insurer client and broker, other solicitors, the insured client and witnesses to gather evidence.
  • Instruct experts as appropriate.
  • Instruct counsel as appropriate.
  • Control Case Manager Diary and action lists.
  • Attend at court hearings as appropriate.
  • Attend conferences and JSMs as instructed subject to client approval.
  • Draft letters, reports, and action plans as directed.
  • Assist with the management, supervision and development of more junior members of the team.
  • Complete client and firm MI procedures.
  • Comply with Data Protection Compliance and Procedures.
  • Comply with CPR and rehabilitation protocol.
  • Keep up to date with legal developments in clinical negligence.
  • Achieve set financial and chargeable targets/KPIs.
  • Ensure relevant deadlines and quality measures are adhered to.

About You:

You will have previous experience and a genuine and demonstrable interest in the above area of work. We also require you to have/be:

  • 1-10 years PQE or on the job litigation experience.
  • Experience of defendant clinical negligence work, whether that be through instructions from insurers or NHSR.
  • Good knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and the pre-action protocol for the resolution of clinical disputes.
  • Willing to look at those wishing to cross qualify from defendant large loss or disease litigation.
  • Multi-defendant case handling experience of benefit.
  • Willingness to get involved in business development and a wish to help present and train clients when required.
  • Understanding of insurance law and of the interplay and relationships between insurers, brokers and their clients.
  • Strong analytical and tactical skills with an eye for detail.
  • Ability to work to deadlines/targets, to prioritise and manage a caseload and deliver effective solutions.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and on your own initiative with a positive attitude.
  • A commercial, solution-driven and client-focused approach.
  • An eagerness to ask for assistance when required and an understanding of the needs of supervision.
