Relief Worker – Riverside Catterick Garrison

Job Title: Relief Worker
Salary: £13.17 per hour
Working Hours: As and when required
Location: The Beacon, Catterick Garrison

The difference you will make as a Relief Worker

You will provide a high quality, customer‑oriented service, assisting in the care and support of customers under the direction of the scheme manager and support team. Your work will promote dignity and improve health and wellbeing in a safe, appropriate environment.

About You – Essential Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse groups of people, including children and professional experiences.
  • Compassion, patience and empathy.
  • Strong customer focus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to cover shifts, including short notice.
  • Approachable with a positive attitude.
  • Team player capable of flexible work to meet business requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning and delivery of personalised support and move‑on plans.
  • Understand and contribute to the risk management process; assist the team with regular reviews of support and risk.
  • Inspire and motivate customers to meet agreed outcomes and develop life skills.
  • Provide day‑to‑day support and tenancy‑related matters.
  • Help identify and promote opportunities for employment, education and training, and support customers to access them.
  • Signpost customers to external support services, such as food banks and community resources.
  • Support customers to be ā€˜tenancy ready’ for a successful move‑on.
  • Facilitate financial independence through budgeting plans and income maximisation.
  • Monitor and support customers’ healthcare needs, ensuring appropriate contact with healthcare professionals.
  • Empower customers to manage their medication safely following Riverside’s medication procedure.
  • Maintain accurate, strengths‑based records on the digital platform.
  • Promote customer involvement and consultation.
  • Deliver group work sessions.
  • Support the referral process for new customers.
  • Contribute to housing management service, including income collection and tenancy‑related support.
  • Work with customers to maintain a safe environment, reporting repairs or health and safety concerns.
  • Clean and prepare customer rooms appropriately.
  • Resolve difficult and challenging situations sensitively, balancing individual needs with service safety.
  • Follow local safeguarding procedures, recognise and act on risks, and appropriately escalated matters.
  • Maintain local partnerships to ensure a holistic range of support for customers.
  • Perform day‑to‑day administration and operational duties.
  • Maintain and update financial administration systems (rent accounts, invoices, petty cash, banking).
  • Collate and submit information returns on funding, health & safety, and performance.
  • Act as point of contact on the phone, reception, and handle a variety of enquiries.

Other Information

  • Work flexible hours, which may not include normal office hours.
  • Use the Lone Worker system as necessary.
  • Ensure customer safety at all times, following Riverside’s policies and procedures.
  • Deliver your role in line with Riverside’s values – ā€œOur Riverside Wayā€.
  • Participate in team meetings, attend regular supervisions and reflective practice sessions.
  • Undertake regular training and continuous development to deliver your role safely.
  • Additional duties may be required in consultation with your Line Manager.

Person Specification – Essential

  • Understanding of barriers faced by vulnerable and diverse customer groups and individuals with complex needs.
  • Experience working in a team and communicating positively with others.
  • Ability to organise tasks and plan effectively while engaging with people.
  • Team player with a caring, empathetic, flexible, resilient, and can‑do attitude.
  • Initiative, confidence and decision‑making ability.
  • Basic administrative and IT skills to maintain records.

Person Specification – Desirable

  • Experience working with vulnerable and diverse customer groups or individuals with complex needs.
  • Personal lived experience of homelessness, rough sleeping, mental health issues or substance misuse.
