WORK HOURS: 12:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. while school is in session / 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. during school breaks and over the summer
SUMMARY: Reporting to the Building Principals, School Business Manager, and the Head Custodian, the Custodian is responsible for providing custodial services at an assigned site(s), ensuring an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors by performing various special cleaning operations and assisting with the preparation of facilities for classroom activities and campus events. Workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations throughout the year. Employee may be required to work evenings, weekends, and emergency situations outside of normal working hours.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Ensures for the safety, cleanliness, maintenance and repair of School District buildings as assigned
- Provides general preventative and corrective maintenance and repairs that do not require services of a licensed professional
- Reports vandalism, unsecured buildings, or equipment malfunctions
- Responsible for oversight and ensuring proper working condition of the building's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment
- Provides services and sets up equipment and rooms for meetings, events and extracurricular activities
- Maintains all equipment and tools in working condition
- Keep supervisor informed as to needed repairs or problems
- Receives deliveries to building and makes deliveries when assigned
- Reviews, maintains or updates Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
- Dry mops, mops and wet washes floors, cleans and/or polishes floors
- Scrubs and polishes floors with appropriate equipment when assigned
- Vacuums, spot cleans or shampoos carpets with appropriate equipment when assigned
- Cleans vertical and horizontal surfaces that collects dust
- Collects and transports refuse, cleans refuse containers, places refuse in appropriate disposal containers
- Cleans windows, doors, lights, and walls
- Cleans window frames, door frames and other high places; using ladder when necessary
- Cleans Men's and Ladies' rooms, washes sinks and other plumbing fixtures, fills receptacles with soap, paper towels and tissues as needed
- Cleans cafeteria and kitchens and removes rubbish during/after meals
- Dusts, cleans and polishes furniture
- Utilizes detergents, disinfectants, polishes, finishes, polishes, etc.
- Moves furniture, tables, and supplies, etc.
- Responsible for touch up painting
- Cleans HVAC vents as needed
- Changes light bulbs and fuses as needed
- Maintains and sweeps outdoor grounds including entranceways, stairs, sidewalks, and walkways
- Responsible for snow/ice removal and salting/sanding of entranceways, stairs, sidewalks and walkways including times prior to and after school day
- Responsible for building checks and addressing emergencies during and outside of normal working hours
- Perform similar or related duties as assigned or as situation dictates
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school graduate with two to three years of related janitorial or custodial experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of the use of safety devices and protective equipment; use of safe practices and methods in the operation of supplies and equipment; correcting any conditions within a building or grounds that may be hazardous and reporting hazards to supervisor; building systems and repairs; inventory control; and record-keeping techniques;
- Skills-based competencies include managing and coordinating day-to-day custodial service operations at assigned school site(s); effective communication skills; and operation of custodian equipment and tools.
- Ability-based competencies include planning and organizing all aspects of custodial duties; analyzing situations accurately and adopting an effective course of action; working independently with little direction; comprehending instructions on labels of equipment and cleaning supplies; preparing for and completing assignments in a proactive and timely manner; coordinating work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency; willing and able to learn new routines, procedures, and develop new skills; and respectful in dealings with others.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of the job, employee may be required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods; position oneself to use a variety of equipment and tools; move heavy objects up to and over 50 pounds; and operate custodial tools and equipment. Accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed primarily in an indoor environment, with occasional exterior work and travel from site to site; exposure to dust, grease, odors, chemicals, and all weather conditions.
