Altera Recruitment Group is proud to be supporting a key client within the UK water sector as they look to appoint a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer. This is a fantastic opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing design team that plays a pivotal role in delivering both clean and wastewater infrastructure projects across the UK.

Key Responsibilities of Mechanical Design Engineer:

  • Lead the mechanical design process on complex infrastructure and non-infrastructure water projects, from concept through to detailed design and delivery.
  • Oversee multi-disciplinary collaboration with civil, electrical, process, and ICA engineers to ensure effective project outcomes.
  • Act as technical lead for both internal teams and external stakeholders, ensuring compliance with all legislative, quality, and safety standards.
  • Support project planning, documentation, and troubleshooting through regular site visits and team coordination.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of a growing design business, shaping processes, mentoring junior staff, and driving engineering best practice.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; Chartered Engineer status (CEng) is highly desirable.
  • 5–8 years' experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within the UK water or wastewater sector.
  • Proven ability to manage complex engineering projects with a strong focus on innovation, practicality, and cost-efficiency.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with experience mentoring and guiding junior engineers.
  • Comfortable attending sites, interpreting technical drawings, and specifying components, equipment, and materials.
