Breathing Space is a Together for Children funded initiative that provides valuable space, time and support for young people with additional needs who are at risk of suspension or exclusion.
Breathing Space offers positive experiences and opportunities to improve emotional wellbeing and support young people to remain in education.

Could you be a positive role model for a young person in need of support?
Together for Children is looking for compassionate, reliable, and enthusiastic volunteers to join our Breathing Space project as Mentors. This rewarding role involves providing 1-to-1 support to young people aged School Years 5 to 9 who are at risk of suspension or exclusion and may have a diagnosis or be on the pathway for Autism and/or SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs).
What You’ll Do
- Meet weekly with a young person for 12 weeks
- Take part in fun, interest‑based activities in the community
- Build a trusting, supportive relationship
- Encourage participation in positive, structured opportunities
- Provide emotional support and be a consistent, positive presence
- Complete short session reflections and manage a small activity budget

The successful applicants will be required to apply for a Disclosure & Barring Service Enhanced Disclosure.
Volunteers undergo a comprehensive induction training package, and an interview before an appointment is offered. Mileage/expenses are paid.
