The Opportunity

Are you looking for a career which is rewarding, at the cutting edge of project development and where you can really make a difference? Come and join our expanding Sizewell C (SZC) team and work on one of the most exciting and largest megaprojects in the UK, whilst being at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy. Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C (HPC), the Sizewell C Project is a nuclear new build project in Suffolk replicated from HPC, which has obtained planning approval and Government financing support. The project has started construction and is now seeking private investment. When completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

We are looking for a SZC Chief Engineer to bring proactive and practical technical and engineering excellence to the mitigation of some of Sizewell C’s most complex and transverse technical topics.

The Role

The Chief Engineer plays a critical role in setting and upholding the technical direction of our project, ensuring all engineering decisions contribute to a safe, reliable, and high-performing nuclear power station. You’ll be a technical authority within Sizewell C’s technical directorate function, ensuring that engineering decisions support the project’s safety, reliability and performance objectives. Our Chief Engineer acts as a defender of replication, assessing whether technical solutions adopted elsewhere - including Hinkley Point C, other international EPR projects and Nuclear Operational Experience more generally- are suitable for Sizewell C. You will uphold compliance with engineering codes and standards, providing expert guidance on complex technical challenges. You’ll apply your technical understanding of EPR projects to embed operational insights helping to maintain the highest standards of engineering excellence.

For ambitious individuals looking to shape the future of nuclear engineering, this role offers growth and serves as a significant stepping stone into more senior technical leadership positions. As Chief Engineer at Sizewell C you’ll be perfectly positioned to take on a lasting influence in operations, or progress towards positions where you’ll help steer the wider engineering strategy. This role offers the opportunity to grow, lead and make a lasting impact to deliver the Power of Good for the UK.

About You

  • You’ll bring technical understanding of EPR technology, ideally from the nuclear sector.
  • You have a solid understanding of the UK’s regulatory environment.
  • You’ll have experience in working with Safety Cases, with the ability to challenge and create innovative solutions within a Safety Case envelope.
  • Your strong communication skills, both verbal and written, enable you to liaise confidently with various stakeholders and communicate technical issues to senior leaders.
  • You excel at problem-solving, quickly identifying emergent issues and implementing solutions to keep things moving forward.

The Skills

  • Background or a degree in engineering (or a related discipline).
  • Experience within safety critical environments / UK regulatory environments, preferable within the Nuclear Industry.
  • Detailed knowledge of technical and engineering challenges that may impact EPRs (and Sizewell C, or nuclear more generally).
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering successful projects and/or large scale project experience.
  • The ability to balance ALARP or ALARA principles with safety and commercial interests.
  • Excellent communication skills in client-facing and contractor facing situations.
  • Highly organised and ability to work with a range of key stakeholders and/or independently.

Desirable

  • Proficiency in IT skills.
  • An existing network within the Nuclear sector, Hinkley Point C or Sizewell C will be hugely beneficial.

Additional Information

Join the team at Sizewell C. The power of good for Britain. It’s not every day you get the opportunity to shape the working culture of what will be one of Europe’s largest construction projects, while also helping Britain to reach its target of Net Zero emissions by 2050. That’s one of the reasons Sizewell C will be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, and you’ll need to be an exceptional professional to reach the high standards this critical infrastructure project demands. The UK is experiencing a nuclear renaissance and Sizewell C – along with its sister project at Hinkley Point C in Somerset – is powering the change. We’re ramping up at pace as we look ahead to the Financial Investment Decision in early 2025, and the start of construction soon after. With government fully on board and public opinion shifting significantly in favour of nuclear, there’s never been a better time to join our project.

By submitting an application to this role, you acknowledge that you have read and understood Sizewell C’s employee privacy policy and EDF’s employee privacy policy. Just to let you know, EDF will be processing and sharing information about your application on behalf of Sizewell C.
