Service Care Legal are recruiting a Coroner Court Assistant for a local authority in North London. This role offers a rare opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the judicial process and support families in times of bereavement with empathy and professionalism. The Court investigates deaths reported to the Coroner that are sudden, unnatural, violent, or of unknown cause.
LOCATION: North London
CONTRACT: 3 months with possibility of extension
RATE: £18.33 to £23.86ph umbrella (DOE and interview performance), £21.53 (PAYE inc. holiday), £19.21ph PAYE exc. holiday
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the first point of contact for court visitors, handling inquiries with discretion and empathy.
- Manage front-of-house duties, including ushering visitors and ensuring compliance with security protocols.
- Provide day-to-day administrative support to the Coroner and court team, including preparing case files, maintaining records, and managing correspondence.
- Assist with courtroom set-up, inquest scheduling, and implementation of judicial instructions.
- Liaise with legal representatives, police, bereaved families, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure sensitive information is handled appropriately.
- Work flexibly to meet the demands of the court, including early starts and occasional late finishes where required.
Person Specification:
- Proven administrative experience, ideally in a legal, public service, or high-sensitivity environment.
- Strong IT literacy, including case management systems and Microsoft Office.
- Confident in managing potentially distressing or confrontational situations calmly and tactfully.
- Previous experience in a judicial or court environment.
- Familiarity with the Coroner’s Court or death investigation process.
- Knowledge of data protection and information governance standards.
