About us
The Independent is an online news publisher that was established in 1986 as a national newspaper independent of party political affiliations or proprietorial influence. In 2016, The Independent became a fully digital publisher, moving away from print in pursuit of sustainability, and to safeguard its values and journalism for the future.
The Independent has always thrived through innovation and change. It was the first British newspaper to add a Saturday magazine; the first to give photography the same prestige as a news copy; the first to challenge the Westminster lobby system of closed briefings; the first broadsheet to move to the more compact ‘tabloid’ format; the first to launch a concise quality compact paper; and the first – and only – major newspaper to pull off a successful transformation to fully digital publishing.
Through The Independent, Independent TV, eCommerce, indy100, subscriptions and other ‘reader revenues’, The Independent plans to continue the work of many decades, bringing much-needed independent journalism to over 100 million unique global visitors a month, making its voice ever louder and more insistent the world over.
We have an international editorial team with our main offices in London and New York.
Independent Studio is the home for The Independent’s growing portfolio of video and audio storytelling. Launched in early 2025, the studio brings together trusted journalism, compelling interviews, and cultural insight in a wide slate of podcasts—spanning news, entertainment, wellness, politics, and more. Our mission is to create standout audio content that reflects the values of The Independent and speaks directly to modern audiences across platforms.
The Role:
Following the launch of Independent Studio, we are looking for an experienced Podcast Producer to join the team at a time of exciting growth. Reporting to the Head of Content, this is a dynamic and creative position that will suit a self-starter with a strong editorial instinct and an enthusiasm for building out The Independent’s podcast slate.
You will work across a range of projects—supporting production on existing podcasts while also collaborating with the Executive Producer to develop, pilot, and launch original series. You’ll be comfortable managing multiple titles at different stages of production and confident working with both in-house talent and external contributors.
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the voice and output of Independent Studio. You’ll be contributing to content that informs, inspires, and engages listeners in the UK, the US, and around the world.
You are:
- An experienced podcast producer with a track record of developing and delivering high-quality audio content across a range of formats and topics.
- A creative thinker with a strong editorial voice who can pitch compelling ideas to internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Skilled in the latest audio and video technologies, with the ability to record and edit both in-studio and remotely.
- Highly organised and resourceful—comfortable managing logistics, booking guests and studio time, and producing detailed call sheets.
- A strong writer with experience scripting interviews, intros, and narrative episodes.
- Digitally savvy, with an understanding of podcast audience behaviours and how shows are promoted and consumed across platforms.
- Calm and confident when working with talent—able to bring out their best on mic and behind the scenes.
Additional desirable skills:
- A strong network of UK and US talent and PR contacts.
- Experience producing branded content or working on commercial partnerships.
- An eye for design and a clear communicator when briefing visual or promotional assets.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
