Job Description:
About the role
A recently funded EU Water4All Joint Transnational Call on Aquatic Ecosystem Services project, DOWES (Disclosing the Overlooked Wetlandscape Ecosystem Services), aims to resolve the interlinkages between water availability in wetlandscapes, their responses and stressors, and the provision of ecosystem services within and beyond their area of influence through synthesis across protected wetlandscapes in Europe, UK, Brazil, and Colombia.
Wetlands are recognized for providing diverse ecosystem services, including biodiversity support, water quality improvement, flood attenuation, recreation, climate regulation, coastal protection, and food and water security. However, the complexity of wetlandscapes complicates the assessment of wetlandscape ecosystem services (WES). Comparative studies synthesizing contrasting wetlandscapes are essential to advance understanding of WES and their broader benefits.
The Research Fellow will focus on work package 2 of DOWES, assessing the impact of human stressors on wetlandscape functioning over space and time. Key duties include:
- Conducting aquatic plant surveys at 40+ wetlands, analyzing geochemical and biological proxies, and contributing to scientific reports.
- Recording water chemistry and physical parameters at selected wetlands.
- Collecting sediment cores from wetlands, with potential fieldwork in Colombia\’s Magdalena River system.
- Contributing to scientific publications based on findings.
This is a full-time, fixed-term position, with funding until 31 December. The role starts from 1st July, at Grade 7, spine point 31 (including London Allowance).
This role qualifies for a UK skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa. Applications from international candidates requiring visas are welcome.
Applicants should meet UCL\’s Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Staff. For accessibility or application support, contact the research administration team.
About you
The ideal candidate has a PhD or MSc in a relevant field, with substantial experience, capable of field surveys, and experienced in wetland ecosystems, scientific writing, and possibly aquatic plant identification and paleolimnological techniques. Knowledge of environmental impacts on ecosystems is a plus but not essential.
