The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) is a highly influential trade organisation and strategic consultancy, representing the vehicle rental and leasing sector. The BVRLA represents over 1,000 companies engaged in vehicle rental, leasing and fleet management and they are leading the charge to decarbonise road transport. Our membership is responsible for a combined fleet of nearly 4.1 million cars, vans and trucks – one-in-ten of all vehicles on UK roads. BVRLA members represent the demand-side of the automotive industry, buying around 50% of new vehicles, including over 80% of those manufactured and sold in the UK. In doing so, they support almost 500,000 jobs, add £7.6bn in tax revenues and contribute £49bn to the UK economy each year. Together with its members, the Association works with policymakers, public sector agencies, regulators, and other key stakeholders to ensure that road transport delivers environmental, social and economic benefits to everyone.

The opportunity: The new Chief Executive will steer the BVRLA in its role to drive the industry to decarbonise road transport. The Chief Executive will deliver against three key strategic aims:

  • To grow all elements of the BVRLA’s accumulated capital, including membership numbers, the financial, physical, professional and reputational elements and not least to seek further continuous incremental benefits of membership.
  • Championing the interests of the sector, projecting a clear and persuasive, evidence-based voice, aimed at successfully influencing government and industry towards the shared goal of zero-emission road transport.
  • Working with members to raise industry standards designed to improve services to customers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement high quality short, medium and long-term strategies, business plans and policies, in consultation with relevant stakeholders within and outside of the Association.
  • Lead, motivate, develop and coach the team to achieve excellence in delivery and to ensure the right level of skills, knowledge and engagement are maintained across the Association.
  • Represent the Association and its members’ interests, to shape political thought and actions of Government and other authorities, whose activities affect vehicle rental, contract hire and fleet management.
  • Act as the lead external face and voice of the Association and the industry, in relation to the government, media, the corporate environment, consumers and other external agencies.
  • Ensure membership is grown through active engagement and retention strategies, supported by a regular programme of membership recruitment.

Requirements include:

  • Demonstrate excellent all-round leadership capabilities, including the ability to set strategy, agree priorities and deliver through coaching, developing and motivating the team.
  • Proven skills to influence at executive/board level with the ability to influence debate and discussion to support efficient decision-making.
  • Exceptional and persuasive communicator, impactful speaker, great listener.
  • Ability to exercise close and proper management of the Association’s finances to ensure results are delivered and diligently reported in line with agreed Business Plans and processes.
  • Experience of identifying opportunities for income growth and enhanced services to members.

With an excelling team and a highly supportive industry, this is a rare opportunity to take a leading role in decarbonising the UK.
