We are seeking a technically skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Design Manager to oversee and coordinate all aspects of electrical services design from Stage 3 to Stage 6. You will be responsible for managing consultant outputs, validating design compliance with the Employer’s Requirements (ERs), planning conditions, and Building Control, while working closely with the Client’s Design Guardian to ensure the final design is suitable for operational handover. This is a key role for ensuring readiness of electrical systems for construction, commissioning, and long-term asset performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Management & Review: Lead technical reviews of all electrical consultant submissions including layouts, schematics, schedules, and specifications (e.g., LV distribution, lighting, fire alarms, life safety systems, BMS interfaces). Assess and monitor progress against the ERs, project brief, and statutory design obligations. Ensure timely delivery of coordinated design information in accordance with programme and procurement milestones. Identify design gaps, overlaps, risks and interface issues, particularly with mechanical and architectural design.
  • Compliance & Regulation: Ensure all electrical designs adhere to relevant Building Regulations (including Part P, Part L, Part B), BS7671 Wiring Regulations (18th Edition), and GLA/Planning-specific energy strategies (e.g., PV, energy monitoring). Monitor and track resolution of planning conditions relevant to electrical systems (e.g., external lighting, PV outputs, EV charging provision). Ensure compliance with relevant British Standards, IET Codes of Practice, and fire strategy documents. Manage consultant delivery of fully coordinated electrical layouts that align with mechanical and architectural requirements.
  • Client and Stakeholder Engagement: Interface with the Client’s Design Guardian to validate that the electrical systems support the building's operational outcomes, including FM strategies and maintenance access. Represent the Principal Contractor at design team meetings, coordination workshops, mock-up reviews, and user group sessions. Advise the client team on cost, performance and technical implications of design changes or value engineering proposals.
  • Handover Preparation & Quality Assurance: Oversee the close-out of electrical design queries, RFIs, and submittals using trackers and CDE platforms. Ensure that commissioning strategies, soft landings requirements, and operational zoning are reflected in the design. Coordinate the validation of as-built drawings, O&M manuals, and test certificates to support readiness for practical completion and BSR Gateway 3 (if applicable).

Strong understanding of electrical services in large-scale residential, commercial, or mixed-use schemes. Competence in interpreting and critiquing complex electrical schematics and specifications. Thorough knowledge of UK regulatory framework, including Building Regulations, GLA requirements, and BSR guidance. Ability to manage multiple design packages, reviews and client interactions concurrently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence internal teams and external stakeholders. Methodical and proactive approach to problem-solving, with attention to technical detail.

Desired Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related field.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards status with IET or CIBSE preferred.
  • 5–10 years’ experience in electrical design or design management within the construction industry.
  • Experience working on BIM Level 2 projects and familiarity with CDE platforms (e.g., BIM360, Viewpoint, Asite).
  • Knowledge of coordination and clash detection tools such as Navisworks or Revizto.

Desirable Knowledge Areas:

  • BSR Gateway 2 and Gateway 3 deliverables for Higher Risk Buildings.
  • Low carbon and renewable systems design (e.g., PV, ASHP interface, EV charging points).
  • London Plan energy compliance measures and their integration into design deliverables.
  • Electrical metering strategies (MID-approved meters, landlord vs tenant split, AMR/EMS compatibility).
  • Life safety systems and their commissioning (fire alarm, AOV power, emergency lighting, generator integration).
