We now have a permanent opportunity for a motivated and suitably qualified Principal C&I Engineer to join our team based in Pembroke Dock, in West Wales. A hybrid working pattern would be considered, but you would need to be in the office 2-3 days a week.
Job Summary:
As a Principal C&I Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and implementation of Control and instrumentation systems with a strong focus on Functional Safety, PLC, SCADA, and Distributed Control Systems (DCS). You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the delivery of safe, reliable, and efficient systems for complex industrial applications. This role will involve a combination of technical leadership, project management, and hands-on engineering.
Role & Responsibilities:
- System Design & Development: Lead the design and specifications of C&I systems, including instrumentation, control panels, and distributed control systems (DCS), particularly DeltaV. Prepare detailed engineering documentation such as material specifications, datasheets, P&IDs, control philosophies, I/O lists, IS Calculations and loop diagrams. Execute design and draughting activities through all project stages (concept, FEED, and detailed design). Prepare and check drawings, including general arrangements, cable routes, block diagrams, loop sheets, and hook-ups. Prepare and check control panel designs, including general arrangements and wiring diagrams. Review vendor documentation and conduct technical bid evaluations. Carry out site surveys and gap analysis. Participate in technical review meetings, such as 3D model reviews, design reviews, HAZIDs, etc.
- Functional Safety: Ensure compliance with Functional Safety standards (IEC 61508, IEC 61511). Develop Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS) and oversee Safety Instrumented System (SIS) lifecycle activities. Conduct Functional Safety Assessments, verifications, and validations to achieve targeted safety integrity levels.
- DCS Expertise: Design and configure DCS Systems, particularly Emerson DeltaV systems, including hardware architecture, control strategies, and graphical interfaces. Technical skills with other systems will be considered (Delta V, ABB 800zA, Siemens PCS7, Honeywell Experion).
- Project Management: Lead multiple projects, ensuring timely delivery within budget and scope. Interface with clients, vendors, and stakeholders to align project requirements and deliverables. Coordinate C&I activities with other disciplines.
- Standards & Compliance: Ensure designs adhere to industry standards, codes, and regulations, including ATEX, BS EN, IEC, ISO and NAMUR standards. Conduct risk assessments and participate in HAZOP studies and LOPA analyses.
- Testing & Commissioning: Oversee factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT), and commissioning activities for C&I systems. Troubleshoot and optimise system performance during the commissioning phase.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical, Instrumentation, or Control Engineering (or equivalent).
- Extensive experience in C&I design, Functional Safety, and DeltaV systems.
- Certification in Functional Safety, BS EN 61511 (e.g., TÜV FSEng. FSP, CFSE).
- Proven track record of DeltaV configuration, programming, and commissioning.
- Experience with HAZOP, LOPA, and SIL determination/verification.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and other engineering documentation.
- Strong communication, leadership, and project management skills.
- Familiar with BS EN 60079.
