Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world. As cities respond to climate change, opportunities for new energy infrastructure, such as district heat networks, are emerging. To support the transition of energy networks in urban areas, we help clients to develop the strategy and target required investments that will deliver decarbonisation.

The Urban Energy + Integrated Energy Systems team in London is recruiting a consultant to join our team and support our work developing integrated energy solutions for a more sustainable and resilient future. We are a multidisciplinary group of engineers, scientists, policy makers and planners. Our projects include strategies, studies and plans from building scale to city scale. We are involved in projects from planning, through design to delivery and operational optimisation.

We work with thinkers and drivers of change, including local, regional and central governments, energy companies, developers, C40 Cities, financial institutions and others in both the private and public sector. We work across the UK and internationally.

Recent projects include:

  • Major contributions to development of heat network zoning policy and legislation covering engineering, data management, policy, delivery and commercialisation aspects;
  • Low carbon energy masterplans for large development sites in the UK, Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East;
  • Whole energy system decarbonisation strategies and investment plans including numerous Local Area Energy Plans, using in-house energy modelling tools;
  • Urban energy infrastructure schemes, including heating and cooling networks, distributed energy systems and other smart local energy systems;
  • Business cases for the deployment of urban energy infrastructure and large-scale retrofit programmes covering techno-economic analysis and commercial, delivery and governance models;
  • Integrated sustainability and resilience frameworks and action plans.

As an energy consultant in the team, you will be part of a peer group with a variety of technical backgrounds, working alongside a diverse team of project managers, senior consultants and leaders. The role requires content knowledge in the field of energy and the built environment, with excellent qualitative/quantitative analysis and report writing and communication skills.

You will be involved in using and developing existing digital tools for data analysis and modelling to support energy masterplans, energy infrastructure feasibility studies, and whole system energy modelling, and to inform energy and sustainability strategies.

We are looking for the following qualifications, skills and knowledge:

  • Qualification in engineering, physics, or similar, with an energy focus.
  • Intent to gain chartered status with a relevant professional institution.
  • Existing knowledge of, or motivation to learn, technical subject matter relevant to the role. For example: design, construction and/or operation of low carbon heating and cooling systems, heating/cooling networks, or renewable energy systems, thermal/energy analysis in an urban or building context, energy system modelling and masterplanning, techno-economic and financial analysis, and/or energy related policy development.
  • Data analysis (quantitative/qualitative) and modelling skills, including familiarity with a selection of software packages (e.g. Excel, IES, EnergyPro, ArcGIS/QGIS, SQL) and some coding experience.
  • Familiarity with current UK climate and energy related standards, policy and legislation.
  • Communication and presentation skills for activities such as stakeholder engagement and workshop delivery, data visualisation, client presentations, report writing and preparation of clear technical material for non-technical audiences.
