JOB OVERVIEW
We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Specialist Occupational Therapistwho is a registered member of HCPC with experience in the field of paediatrics and working within an education setting and / or with children with special educational needs.
Working as the Specialist Occupational Therapist you will be responsible for providing occupational therapy as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to the pupils of the school in line with the aims, objectives and development plan of the school and Speech and Language UK. To contribute to the development of service to and for the pupils of the school and their carers.
As the Specialist Occupational Therapist you will be responsible for assessing the pupils to determine their individual Occupational Therapy need.
DUTIES
Your duties as a Specialist Occupational Therapist will include:
Caseload Management
- Assess the pupils to determine their individual Occupational Therapy need
- Plan, deliver and evaluate therapy treatment programmes as identified in the child’s EHCP, including sensory integration therapy, perceptual-motor approach, Neurodevelopmental techniques and other specialist areas as appropriate
- Educate staff and parents regarding OT related issues and interventions
- Objectively monitoring effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions
- Provide written reports on children’s progress
- Maintain a high quality of Occupational Therapy practice, according to the College of Occupational Therapists Code of Professional Ethics, school policies and code of conduct
Service Development
- Participate in the development of the role of the occupational therapy service within the school
- Undertake clinical audits
- Deliver in-service training formally and informally to staff and parents
- Develop or maintain a special interest in a relevant area agreed with the line manager
- Line manage the ‘Main grade’ Occupational Therapist and provide clinical support, training and supervision to junior staff, volunteers and students
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
- Degree in Occupational Therapy (BSc OT, DIP COT or equivalent)
- Registered as practicing member of HCPC
- Evidence of recent and relevant personal/professional development
- Previous post-graduate experience in the field of paediatrics
- Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of working within an education setting and/or with children with special educational needs
- Experience of specialist assessment tools, treatment approaches and techniques relevant to paediatric occupational therapy
- Experience of sensory integration as an approach to therapy
- The ability to prioritise, and independently manage a caseload
- Exceptional clinical skills and a strong knowledge of current evidence-based practice to make sound clinical judgements
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Post Graduate training and experience in Sensory Integration/ Bobath/ SCERTS
- Post Graduate training and experience in delivering Therapeutic Listening protocols
- Experience of working with primary aged pupils
- Experience of devising and implementing sensory diets and/or Zones of Regulation programmes
- Experience of specialist seating
- Experience of working with children with speech, language and communication difficulties
- Knowledge of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices and software to enable functional recording of written work as an alternative to handwriting
- Knowledge of speech, language and communication difficulties in children
- Knowledge of Sign Supported English signing system
- Knowledge of behaviour management strategies
