We are looking for experienced and passionate Qualified Social Workers to join a dedicated Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) team in the North West. As part of the team, you will be involved in a fast-paced, busy, and supportive environment. Your responsibilities will include coordinating assessments and demonstrating principles of the Mental Health Act, such as the least restrictive and participation principles. You will ensure that individuals are appropriately interviewed and, if admitted to hospital, are conveyed in a humane and dignified manner.

You will provide the Council’s statutory emergency duty response outside of office hours, including weekends and bank holidays, in challenging and complex situations. The role involves responding to adults in need of mental health assessment, safeguarding, and social care emergency interventions.

The role holder will be responsible for the safe delivery of social care, ensuring statutory responsibilities are met, and providing high-quality services. Managing safeguarding risks effectively within a multi-agency environment, the role requires a holistic and person-centred approach, keeping customers and families central to the process.

The AMHP has the authority to apply for detention under the Mental Health Act and to agree to Community Treatment Orders and Guardianship requests. For trained Best Interest Assessors (BIAs), recommending a deprivation of liberty under the Mental Capacity Act is also within scope.

Ideal candidate will be:

• Professionally qualified social worker registered with Social Work England.
• Qualified AMHP.
• Post-qualification experience, especially with complex cases.
• Willing to undergo an enhanced disclosure check.
• Available to work out of hours, including weekends and bank holidays, to support a 24/7 service.

In this role, you will:

• Effectively respond to out-of-hours referrals, making highly complex decisions across social work duties.
• Carry out assessments and share outcomes appropriately in emergency settings.
• Assess and facilitate hospital admissions or refer to less restrictive alternatives, liaising with crisis and medical teams.
• Ensure effective safeguarding interventions, managing investigations, protection planning, and documentation.
• Apply the Mental Capacity Act appropriately, seeking least restrictive options and making immediate decisions in high-risk situations.
• Engage informal supports, resolve conflicts, and coordinate with statutory, voluntary, and independent services. Produce high-quality documentation in line with policies and deadlines.
