At Wastewater Fuels, our mission is to transform wastewater into a valuable resource through innovative Microbial Electrolysis Cell technology - a low-carbon, sustainable solution for wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and energy production. We are seeking a Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design, prototyping, and development of mechanical systems within our multidisciplinary team. This hands-on role will play a key part in shaping our mechanical design strategy and improving our manufacturing processes as we move towards scaled production. The ideal candidate is technically strong, proactive, and creatively minded, someone who enjoys problem-solving, building, and refining physical systems. You should be comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment, capable of developing practical solutions with limited resources, and keen to help us raise our Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL).
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop mechanical components and systems from concept through to production
- Produce detailed 3D models and technical drawings using CAD software
- Lead prototype development using 3D printing, machining, and low-volume fabrication methods
- Conduct testing, evaluation, and iterative improvement of designs
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and project alignment
- Implement and refine manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and scalability
- Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, safety protocols, and best practices
- Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including BOMs and supplier drawings
- Contribute to strategic planning for future manufacturing capability and infrastructure
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline
- 1–5 years of relevant experience in mechanical design or manufacturing (startup or R&D environments a plus)
- Proficient in 3D CAD software with hands-on experience in 3D printing or other rapid prototyping tools
- Strong understanding of design-for-manufacture (DFM) principles and mechanical assembly
- A creative, hands-on approach with demonstrable initiative—personal or side projects are highly valued
- Excellent communication, organisation, and time-management skills.

- Salary: £32,000 – £35,000 (depending on experience) + Pension + Share Options
- Holiday: 25 days + bank holidays + Christmas shutdown
