Overview
This post is designed to support ST4-7s who wish to make a commitment to education as part of their career. The 12-month \’out of programme experience\’ (OOPE) post, based at Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust, aims to help the post holder build personal teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research. A designated educational mentor will oversee development as an educator during the placement and co-ordinate opportunities for personal development. A customised programme of training and educational experiences will be designed around the needs of the individual. Although enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central, with critical engagement in educational issues around undergraduate and postgraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally.

The Fellowship includes these components
- 1. Teaching
The post holder will have a regular schedule of teaching commitments and contribute to the Trust\’s undergraduate education programme for Medical Students. In collaboration with the Trust Undergraduate Tutor, the post holder will lead in supporting and delivering in-house teaching for undergraduate medical students on Psychiatry placements, including induction days, coordinating fellows to teach, supporting simulation training and student meetings. Undergraduate Administrators facilitate feedback and organise teaching programmes to ensure appropriate coverage; opportunities to audit aspects of the undergraduate teaching programme may be available. - 2. Educational Research and QI
The post holder may participate in educational research activities and QI projects focused on undergraduate medical education and other learners. The Trust\’s Research department and QI Team support these activities. The post holder will be supported to generate publishable outputs, including conference presentations and peer‑reviewed publications. - 3. Clinical commitment
A clinical commitment of 1 day per week with the Trust to maintain clinical involvement, with details depending on the appointee\’s specialty. Remuneration will align with training level at appointment time. - 4. Learning about Medical Education Structures and Roles
Attend the Trust Medical Education Committee meetings and have opportunities to attend KMMS (Canterbury) and GKT (London) Medical School meetings; shadow UG tutors and the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education. - 5. Simulation
Simulation training for undergraduates is a key part of the Medical Education department; the post will support simulation training delivered face to face at teaching events.

Clinical duties
Within the Medical Education department, the Fellow will work with a multi-professional team including Consultants and trainees. There will be exposure to older adults and psychiatric inpatient wards, with specialist clinics possible depending on the candidate\’s requirements. Contribution to an out-of-hours tier 2 on-call rota may be expected for section 12 approved doctors.
Responsibilities
The Fellow will be part of the Medical Education team and carry out projects/roles to support education, training and improved experience for medical student doctors, with a focus as agreed in Education and Training. The role will offer opportunities to develop educational insight and capability, including lecturing and small-group work with undergraduates and multi-professional learning. Generic professionalism training and workplace-based assessment methods and appraisal techniques will be provided. The Fellow will be expected to build a clinical educational portfolio and may work with the Medical Education Manager and Deputy on projects such as:
- Simulation facility development and training
- Medical student teaching and inductions
- Matching specialty teaching to curricula
- Development of undergraduate website content
- Development of in-house e-learning resources
- Medical Education audit and quality monitoring
- Faculty development teaching
Administrative support will be offered on all projects. The post holder will carry out two sessions of clinical work per week. The duties are not exhaustive and may change over time with management review and amendment.
Appraisal and supervision
The Director of Undergraduate Medical Education will supervise the Fellow, with one hour per week of supervision, including setting objectives and agreeing a personal development plan. Development needs will be met through the Trust, with opportunities and services provided by KMPT.
Environment
- Driving licence essential. The post holder must be flexible and travel across KMPT sites; cross-site work within Kent may be required.
- Face-to-face teaching support at various KMPT Kent sites.
A full-time post (40 hours) is available and a second post which can be part-time (from 2 days/16 hours per week up to full time). The post is a 12-month fixed-term OOPE from 06/08/2025 to 04/08/2026. The post holder will attend meetings, teaching sessions and events at various locations in Kent; base is flexible. The Medical Education Fellowship post is hosted by KMPT to support Undergraduate workstreams for Medical Student Psychiatry Placements linked to King’s College London (GKT), KMMS and KMPT. Funding for a Postgraduate Qualification in Education is available. Proposed interview date: 28 March 2025.
