This is an exciting collaboration between London Metropolitan University and Newham Hospital (NUH), part of Barts Hospital Trust. The Associate will be based at NUH (E13 8RU), with the option of hybrid working (minimum 60% on site). The purpose of the KTP project is to embed the practice of healthy placemaking through design within NUH, using a combination of co-design and change management principles. Over 1.6ha of NUH’s 13ha site is significantly underused, offering untapped potential for innovative, collaborative spatial projects designed to improve staff experience, support preventative healthcare and optimise financial efficiency. Through co-design, leading to the production of a new masterplan, the KTP will introduce management practices to NUH, including new spatial planning capabilities, positioning NUH as a leader in NHS estates management for healthy places.

The Associate should have a design background, spatial literacy at building and urban scales, an understanding of urban design, placemaking, and urban design management as well as participatory co-design processes, stakeholder collaboration, and strategic planning. An understanding of organisational change management principles would be beneficial. You’ll be supported by experienced academics at London Met as well as Newham Hospital’s team of subject matter experts. A £4,000 package is available for training and development purposes.

Key objectives include:

  • Survey the site, community and stakeholders to gather insights and identify opportunities
  • Lead a co-design process with internal and external stakeholders to build a masterplan
  • Implement a spatial or programmatic improvement to one area of the NUH site
  • Embed knowledge for ongoing implementation in NUH with potential scaling to other hospitals/trusts

About the business: Newham Hospital cares for one of the most diverse populations in England. It is part of Barts Hospital Trust. Located in Plaistow in the vibrant East End of London, it provides all the services expected of a local hospital, including emergency care, surgery, women’s and children’s health, maternity services, specialist medicine and more.
